A savory herbal tinge opens the stage for the 2020 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva as notes of wild strawberry and floral underbrush fill out the bouquet. Lean and mean, yet balanced, this splashes across the palate with depths of tart cherry and blackberry as a saline mineral concentration adds form toward the close. Still tannic despite its late release, the 2020 leaves the senses reeling with youthful poise as nuances of exotic spice linger on. Have patience here, or if drinking today, give this a healthy decant.

The 2022 Gravels is a gorgeous, beautifully balanced wine. The blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Carignane and 15% Mourvèdre works so well. Understated and delicate, with lovely textural depth, the 2022 is very fine. The 100% stems are not that evident in this vintage. Instead, the 2022 speaks to total balance and class.

Aged for a year in foudre then moved to demi-muids, the 2022 Côte Rôtie Les Journaries (known by the Maestria name in Europe) comes from the Landonne and Côte Rozier lieux-dits and was not destemmed. It has a similar perfume to the Amethyste with its red, blue, and black fruits as well as rose, potpourri, and peppery notes, yet it's more seamless, full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and has a great finish. The 2022 Cote Rotie Les Journaries (as it is known in the USA but called Mastria elsewhere) unveils a deep, complex bouquet of cassis, spices and dark wild berries intertwined with delicate notes of dark cherries and black olives. Full-bodied, broad and sappy on entry, it's textured and layered, with a seamless, pure core of fruit, powdery tannins and bright acids. It culminates in a long, ethereal and dark berry-inflected finish. Originating from vines situated in the western part of La Landonne (Côte Blonde and Côte Rozier), this exquisite wine masterfully combines a sappy, velvety texture with a racy density.

"A new-wave Sherry by winemakers Ramiro Ibáñez and Willy Perez makes its debut on the Place de Bordeaux this September. 100% Palomino Fino grapes come from the 3.35-hectare San Cayetano vineyard in Macharnudo, planted in 1988. Beautifully fragranced nose, really perfumed and floral, scented with wildflowers. The wine sees one year of flor ageing but it's distinctly dry and round on the palate. There's a thickness to the texture, like thick honey but with salted, softly spiced edges and a core of bright lemon, peach and pear that gives tang, energy and excitement to the expression. Poised and refined, this has a lovely ease about it, beautifully textured and fully flavoured with mouthwatering acidity and bursts of bright citrus zest that counter the saltiness - close your eyes and you could be by the beach! "The 2022 Macharnudo San Cayetano Vino de Pasto is an unfortified Palomino from Sherry soils, from the famous Macharnudo vineyard in Jerez. The grapes were sun dried for a few hours, and the wine has less biological influence and more limestone influence despite having aged under a veil of flor yeasts; it comes from a plot of more concentration than the regular Macharnudo. 2022 was already an intense vintage; they wanted to avoid the wine being too heavy, and the wine shows superb. The La Escribana also comes from the Macharnudo vineyard, but this wine comes from a different plot in Macharnudo, an adjacent plot of very old vines (older than the others), looking for finesse and definition in the palate. It is more of a white wine than a flor wine. It was a dry year, and despite everything, the wine finished with a moderate 13.5% alcohol. The regular Macharnudo they had produced since 2016 will now include the name of the plot, El Notario, to distinguish it from these new bottlings. This 2022 has a powdery, chalky mouthfeel, very much the expression of the albariza calcareous soils. It doesn't have high acidity but has very good freshness and balance and a tasty minerality that makes you salivate; it's super tasty. This should bloom with a couple of years in bottle. There are some 6,000 bottles. It was bottled in July 2023. This is not in the Jerez/Sherry appellation, but there's an initiative to create a separate appellation of origin for these unfortified white wines."

Highly aromatic and expressive, the 2018 Costa Della Sesia Nebbiolo Castleng is flush with aromas of candied red flowers, strawberry compote, and licorice. Medium-bodied, it is supple with softly textured fruit, with an almost Grenache-like ease and charm, offering notes of herbes de Provence, apricot, and dusty earth along with fine tannins, fresh acidity, and elegant balance. Drink 2023-2030.

Shimmering notes of orange peel and lemon juice illuminate over the succulent muscovado sweetness, whilst the generous lime acidity cleans the palate in preparation for the next flood of flavours: caramel and dried fig. Never-ending and remarkable.

"The 1985 Colheita Tawny Port Dalva comes in with 129 grams per liter of residual sugar. This adds a layer or two of depth to the 1994 Colheita reviewed. It is pretty fine. The texture is richer, a bit unctuous, and the finish lingers beautifully. Dribbling waves of caramel and a hint of molasses over the palate, this quickly becomes irresistible. It is nicely balanced, too, easy to drink."

Both of these blocks are planted to Clone 2, a virus-free clone that came to FPS from Lodi. Block 7 was planted in 1975 and Block 22 in 1995. The 2022 Zinfandel Blocks 7 & 22 features floral, tea-like and even orange-like aromas, plus bold berry fruit. It's medium to full-bodied, silky-textured and open, with only the slightest hint of raisined fruit and a hint of French oak (one-third new barrels for 15 months). Finishing long and velvety, it's a fine Zin for drinking young, at a reasonable price.
