Blackberry fruit arrives on the palate, joined by more cedar and roasted pork shoulder flavor. Grab some quick, as it is going to be a long, long time 'til touchdown brings it around again.

The 2019 Pinot Noir “Petaluma Gap” from Stewart Johnson’s Kendric Vineyards is once again outstanding and a great, great value. The wine includes thirty-five percent whole clusters this year and was raised for two years in cask prior to bottling without filtration. Twenty-five percent of the casks were new this year for the wine, which comes in at a svelte thirteen percent octane. The wine offers up a refined aromatic constellation of cherries, strawberries, cinnamon, mustard seed, a touch of beetroot, a lovely base of soil, woodsmoke and a nice touch of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied, young and transparent, with a lovely core of red fruit, tangy acids, fine focus and grip and a long, complex and moderately tannic finish. This will want a handful of years in the cellar to properly blossom. It is a very elegant example of west coast pinot noir.

This is a stellar Kabinett and Riesling that freaks shouldn’t miss. How stimulating and mouthwatering! The grapes were sourced between September 23 and 25 from roughly 30-year-old vines in Niedermennig, Obermennig, Krettanch and Oberemmel and came in at 83° Oechsle. 26,000 bottles produced. A picture-book Kabinett. Tasted from AP 01 19 in June 2019."

Very light and transparent in the glass, this carbonically fermented quick-release wine is very satisfying, easily-to-quaff partner for a cheese and charcuterie plate. Cherry, incense, hibiscus and earth aromas on the nose lead into cranberry, plum and salty meat flavors on the palate.

The 2020 Rive de Malva Saint-Joseph delivers aromas of black raspberries and bramble fruit, which is woven together with spices, pepper, wet stones, lavendar and hints of licorice. On the palate this with nicely balanced with medium body that is wrapped in a silky tannins which continues to impress all the way through the racy finish. A lovely wine to approach now, but should become even more compelling after some short-term cellaring.

A very good introduction to this appellation. Quite a complex nose of black pepper, smoke and blackberry with a hint of leather. The palate is medium-bodied but focused and energetic, the gentle tannin already well integrated, the finish long and clean. Drink or hold.
