The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable.

The super bargain of the portfolio has to be the red 2017 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza, which this year shows more development and faster aging, with more tertiary notes than the other reds from 2013 and 2014 that I tasted next to it. The frost of April 2017 killed 100% of the vegetal mass at Cubillo, and the grapes they picked were exclusively from the second generation, therefore fruit that ripened in a much shorter cycle, as the harvest was also earlier. It has notes of damp earth, mushrooms, truffles and forest floor, dry leaves and decayed flowers and herbs. It has a polished palate and is medium-bodied, with mostly resolved tannins, and it feels a little lighter. But it's still worth it. It was produced with a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo from vines averaging 53 years of age. It fermented in their old oak vats and matured in used American oak barrels for three+ years. It has 13.5% alcohol, a 3.0 pH and 6.5 grams of acidity. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.

Wild fermentation, a little bit of barrel-aging on lees and a 10% addition of Sémillon in the blend make the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc far from your stereotypical Marlborough style. This wine plays on its clarity, texture and freshness. It's aromatically subtle, with green notes meeting nectarine and blackcurrant. While the region's natural freshness abounds, the wine retains a round shape and natural curve before being sewn up by a thread of acidity. There are layers of interest here that will keep you coming back.

Restrained, if not low-key on the nose, with spicy and peppery character to the red-fruit, pomegranate and fresh floral aromas. Medium-bodied, it shows firm, youthful tannins with crisp acidity and an austere, grainy finish. Try from 2027.

The 2021 Barolo is deep, succulent and layered. Dark-toned fruit, leather, spice, cedar and dried herbs build effortlessly in the glass. Floral and savory overtones play off a core of black cherry/plum fruit. All the elements are very nicely balanced. This is a fine showing from the Scavino family and a terrific wine in its peer group.

Aromatic, with ground pepper and dried sage notes, this well-knit, medium- to full-bodied red features a dense tannic frame, layered with dark and brambly notes of black currant and black raspberry fruit, melted licorice and smoky, toasty oak. This Sagrantino-led blend of just a handful of those varieties offers supple red cherry, cranberry, floral and peppery-spice aromas to start. The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is terrific. Rich and forward, the 2022 is a bit extroverted for Frog's Leap, but all the elements are so well balanced. The Cabernet is typically in a blend from three ranches—Rossi, Chavez-Leeds and Red Barn—but in 2022, most of the wine is from Rossi and Chavez-Leeds, as Red Barn was mostly declassified because the fruit was compromised by the year. Ripe red cherry fruit, blood orange and spice notes convey an impression of exoticism that is super distinctive.
