"Production was down slightly in 2022, but Modus Operandi's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is reassuringly excellent, with bold notes of black cherries and raspberries on the nose. It's 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% each Merlot and Malbec, with elements coming from Coombsville, Atlas Peak and Carneros; there's even some Sage Ridge and Houyi fruit in the mix as well. Nicely done, it's not overly ripe or tannic, being full-bodied and structured but ripe and supple enough to sample now, with a lingering crystalline quality to the finish."

Gruet is one the great “surprise” wines. Who would have thought that a superb sparkling wine could be produced in New Mexico? For any skeptics, the Gruet Blanc de Noirs should be a revelation. Lightly spiced red fruit on the nose and palate showcase the pinot noir used to make up the cuvée, and the wine’s focus can be traced to the chardonnay component. A great value and dependable producer make this a real must-buy.

It is vibrant and racy in style, with crisp wild berry fruits and a cascade of inner floral perfumes. Nuances of sour citrus and inner cedar tones add complexity throughout. Its structure comes in late, crunchy and edgy, leaving a tart blackberry saturation that pinches at the cheek as steely mineral tones echo throughout. This is a high-energy Brunello from Sassetti with the balance for medium-term cellaring.
