This is precise and brilliantly detailed, showing lime sorbet, fresh fig and delicate floral notes on the nose, followed by a superbly concentrated palate offering excellent fruit purity and finesse. It’s wonderfully supported by elegant texture and lively acidity with a sustained, structured finish. At its best: 2028 to 2044.

A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Thieuley shows an elegant, more complex bouquet than its 2018 counterpart, exhibiting aromas of dark berries, pencil lead, licorice and menthol, followed by a medium to full-bodied, juicy and enveloping palate that’s framed by powdery tannins. Seamless and already nicely integrated, this vintage can be approached with pleasure, even if has four or five year of evolution ahead of it.

The pale red 2023 Dr. Bruno Clarete Baga was produced with grapes from 25-year-old vines in Vilarinho do Bairro as a collaboration with Bairrada producer Quinta da Lagoa Velha, fermented and aged exclusively in concrete. It has a perfumed nose with shy notes of dry roses and tar, varietal, expressive and clean. It's medium-bodied and has contained ripeness and 12% alcohol. It's tasty, has very fine tannins and is surprisingly elegant and highly drinkable. It took me to Piamonte... 4,000 bottles produced.

Tasted at the Palmères de Castillon event, where I was a jury member, and this was one of the wines picked out blind. I checked it against a different bottle at home later, and suggest that it is given at least half an hour in a carafe, as it remains fairly closed, but once again this is proof of the quality of 2022, and it's a seriously impressive wine that offers wonderful value. I'm always a fan of Clos Puy Arnaud, and you get the deft precision of the winemaking here, coupled with ripe blueberry and raspberry fruits, liquorice, black tea, pomegranate and slate-scrape tannins.

The 2022 Clos Puy Arnaud is a dense, extroverted wine. Inky dark fruit, licorice, menthol and cloves are all amplified. Usually Clos Puy Arnaud is more refined, but in 2022, the vintage dominates and speaks loudly. Even so, this is a compelling offering. I look forward to tasting it with bottle age.

This wine is rich, supple, with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, tangerine cream, cinnamon, and notes of Orange blossom on the nose. The flavors on the palate are ripe peach, cranberry-cherry compote, apricot, star anise, with fine mousse mid- palate, toasted chestnut, orange cream, and a dry long finish. The exquisite 2024 Chardonnay Les Granitiers follows up from the fantastic 2023 with a higher percentage of Coastview (44%) grapes and 43% from Fogstone instead of Escolle, as well as small amounts of Pelio and Spear, all sites rich in granitic soils. Though the vintage was warmer, there’s no lack of freshness or verve, the wine as linear, high-toned, and light-bodied as ever. Native-fermented and aged in mostly neutral barrel and some stainless for under a year, there’s texture and complexity that buoys the salinity and earthy undertones of fresh herb and sea spray. Another masterful wine from this small producer. Drink now through 2036.

The 2016 Suvereto Montecristo is a luxuriously thick, classic blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot that just breathes Coastal Tuscany, conjuring images of Mediterranean shrub and straight, cypress-lined roads leading to the sea. The area's clay soils give the wine extra succulence and softness, although as it turns out, they are not particularly well suited to Petit Verdot, so that portion has been reduced in this vintage. This is a soft and ripe red that would work great with a Tuscan white bean stew.

The 2016 Montecristo, 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, is a dense, potent wine. Inky black fruit, chocolate, new oak and licorice all come through in this heady, flamboyant wine. The 2016 is not at all subtle, but it will please fans of the style.

A very spicy nose with lots of roasted rosemary, blackberries, sandalwood, cedar, thyme, pine cones and oyster shells. Full-bodied and intense on the palate with the wood certainly seeping through, but it also shows finesse and density. Drink from 2025.
