The palate is smooth in texture with light tannins but not great depth. It has a touch of white pepper and clove toward the slightly attenuated finish. Fine, but it's early-drinking."

"This single-vineyard blend of Sangiovese and Merlot from the Bertinga vineyard, owned by Castello di Ama until 2015, is a superb wine. The Sangiovese is vinified in concrete then aged in large Stockinger casks, while the Merlot is vinified in stainless steel and aged in 500l tonneaux. It rests in bottle for four years before release. The result shines for its bright and juicy outlook, the alberese soil having its presence felt in the lovely sapidity and mineral tang which accompanies hedgerow fruits and herbal notes on the textured palate. The finish is full of bold, ripe red, black and blue berries yet carries elegance and freshness."

A little deeper and probably more lactic than the 2019, but a little less exuberant. There are more dried herbs and minerals, with dried grapefruit and a touch of Aperol. Unique in style, which makes you think of a young Lopez de Heredia rosado (and you wouldn't be surprised if you find who makes this). Textured, full and harmonious despite higher alcohol. The 2025 Village Chardonnay leads with banana and crushed cashew, musk sticks and preserved lemon. The palate is silky and full of flavor, and although not as complex or weighty as the other Chardonnay cuvées from this iconic New Zealand producer, it offers sensational intensity and value for money. This comes recommended, as usual. 13.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Sourced from the estate’s best parcel, close to a tributary of the Minho River where the vines are grown on clay and river stones, Mendes has produced an extraordinary expression of Vinho Verde. It is fermented in lightly toasted 400-litre French oak barrels and aged for nine months with minimal batonnage, and none after the first three months. Floral and subtly green, with pineapple fruit, stony reduction and a gentle smoky note, it is rich yet impeccably balanced by racy acidity and mineral tension. Pithy, graceful and profoundly expressive, it combines immediate drinkability with impressive ageing potential. Drink from 2026-2032

The 2022 Parcela Única is an Alvarinho from a specific plot from the Quinta da Torre Quinta da Torre, 5.5 hectares of their oldest vines planted in a place with more boulders, a mixture of alluvial and fluvial terrace, where they also take the riper bunches, the lower ones on the vines. It fermented and matured in new 400-liter oak barrels with a minimal toast, where the wine matured with the full lees for nine months. It has a more balsamic, complex and evolved nose that is subtle and elegant, denoting more age and also more complexity and depth. The oak is neatly integrated in the wine. It has good ripeness, 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.32 and 6.3 grams of acidity, with a bone-dry and serious finish that is granite driven

Medium- to full-bodied with tannins that have an incredible finesse and length. It goes on for minutes. It’s all about elegance and class. There’s harmony and freshness for a dry year. Seductive and so long. 72% cabernet sauvignon, 23% carmenere, 4% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drinkable now, but one for the cellar. Drink from 2028.

Almaviva 2022 (Maipo Valley; 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc; 1% Petit Verdot; 15% alcohol). Fascinating and distinctive aromatically, all the more so as it’s a little timid at first. A baked earth path, sun on sand, deep dark berry fruits – mulberries and brambles – and then dark stone fruits – damson and black cherry. Crushed black and red peppercorns and a hint of nutmeg. A massive attack of great intensity, depth and concentration, accentuated by the quite narrow frame, with the staunchly Cabernet tannins really grabbing the fruit from the moment this hits the tongue, pulling and massaging it back to the spine and releasing little plumes of juicy freshness like ripples as they do so. Quite sunny in feel (‘solaire’ as the French would say) and spicier than the 2021, this is a real vin de garde. Very impressive once again.”

“The 2022 Almaviva leads with a brooding, woody nose with savory, roasted pepper aromas and pleasing top notes of lavender and dried herbs. The palate is dense, luscious and staining, with considerable concentration and opulence. The finish continues this lush, layered opulence, concluding with supple, firm, unyielding tannins, welcomely braced with fresh acidity and herbal, methol-tinged flourishes. Despite its immediate richness, this is quite wound up, and it will take a few years to integrate its formidable tannins further. But it should be a joy to watch develop over the coming decade and beyond. It's a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in 70% new French oak.”
