The first 2022 Napa Cabernet I've tasted that avoids the warm, juicy ripeness often associated with the vintage. Instead, it stays true to its character, showcasing beautifully pure black cherry and blue fruit aromatics, with a cooling menthol note and coiled energy. Framed by crisp, crunchy tannins and gorgeous, lacy acidity, leading to an impressively long finish of violets and fragrant bay laurel. Precise and focused. The blend contains 4% each of Petit Verdot and Merlot.

While the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five includes some purchased fruit, the aim is for it to become fully estate once new plantings come into production. It's an incrementally richer, darker and more concentrated wine than Shafer's TD-9, with black cherries wrapped in a subtle cloak of almost ephemeral cedar and vanilla. Full-bodied and velvety textured, with a lingering finish, it should drink well for at least 15 years.

On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, young and nascently complex, with a fine core, tiny, pinpoint bubbles, brisk acids and a very long, balanced finish that shows just a whisper of leesiness from battonage. The 2024 Bannockburn Pinot Noir is dark fruited and plush, with nutmeg biscuit and cranberry, blood plum and mulberry. The wine is exotic and peppered with baking spices—one assumes this is via the oak rather than the fruit. 2024 was a superb vintage in Central Otago, and the wines that I have seen so far echo this. It seems this wine just needs a little more time—or a decant—in order to show its best. It's very impressive regardless. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The 2024 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is a terrific introduction to the range. Apricot, white flowers, mint, white pepper and tangerine oil are nicely pushed forward. The warmer season yielded an especially forward, open-knit Chardonnay. It's a style that works quite well at this level.

The 2019 Les Tourelles de Longueville is a blend of 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 68% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 18th of September to the 11th of October. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 30% new, for 12 months. The production of this wine represents 28% of the harvest. Very deep purple-black colored, it features captivatingly pure crushed black plums and fresh blackberry scents on the nose with suggestions of tilled soil, pencil lead, licorice and charcoal with a waft of bay leaves. The full-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating black fruits with a wonderfully plush texture and just enough freshness in the background, finishing long and earthy.

The 2019 Les Tourelles de Longueville is a dark, somber wine. Black cherry, heavy torrefaction, graphite, licorice, cloves, leather and pipe tobacco wrap around the palate in a serious Pauillac. Somber and introverted, the 2019 is in no mood to show all its cards today. In a vintage in which to many wines are bright, Tourelles has a real sense of baritone-like intensity. The 2019 is more brute power than elegance.

One of the finest vintages to date for this estate, possibly eclipsing the 2016, the 2022 Château Fleur Cardinale offers a medium to full-bodied, seamless, incredibly elegant and balanced profile that brings beautiful richness in its ripe black raspberry and cassis fruits as well as some spicy, floral, and herbal nuances. Balanced and nicely concentrated, with ripe tannins, it does everything right in the vintage.

These guys know how to combine intensity and lift, and here they capture the exuberance and exoticism of the spice and fruit character of 2022 wiyhout going overboard. This is big but has enjoyable floral character and chalky tannins, needs some time in bottle to soften, but there is juice and punch.

Floral flecks with ripe black fruits on the nose. Straight and linear, concentrated but kept in check by fine and firm tannins that keep the frame relatively narrow and focused from start to finish. Nice purity and clarity of elements with cool blueberries alongside slate, liquorice and crushed stones giving the mineral nuance. Still has tension so you're not getting much width at this point but everything is presented so nicely and formally, all in its place with high acidity making it such an appealing, friendly and drinkable wine. Great stuff from this estate that continues to impress. Yield 38hl/ha. Harvest 19-30 September. Ageing 12-14 months, 72% new French oak barrels, 18% one wine, 7% 30hl foudres, 3% 750l amphora. 3.6pH. The 2022 Fleur Cardinale is soft, open and forthcoming. Dark fruit, chocolate, sweet spice, leather and licorice all open nicely. There's good depth but less in the way of energy or excitement. All the elements are very well balanced. Perhaps I caught this on a quiet day. Tasted two times.

On the medium to full-bodied palate it is very lively, grainy and super-concentrated, finishing long and shimmery.

The 2021 Continuum is flat-out gorgeous, but it's not for the instant gratification crowd either. Darker currants, graphite, crushed stone, and truffly goodness all define the aromatics and it's full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, with the tannic, age-worthy style of the vintage. Count yourself lucky if you have bottles in the cellar. It will benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and should see its 30th birthday in fine form.
