The 2023 Pétalos has around 20% grapes from Corullón and the rest bought from around 100 families across Bierzo, approximately 91% Mencía, 8% whites and 1% other reds that fermented in open-top oak and stainless steel vats with indigenous yeast. Malolactic fermentation took a couple of months in oak and stainless steel, and the wine matured in barriques and bocoyes for 10 months. It comes in at 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.74. It has a serious nose that combines berry fruit with herbs and a licorice twist, and it is a little tighter and more herbal, denoting more sensation of freshness in the wine even if the year was also warmish. But the peaks of heat did not reach the highs they did in 2022. It makes you think of the Bierzo wines from yesteryear, with the rain during the harvest. It's elegant but there's weight. Despite the price level, this is a wine that aged beautifully in bottle, something you don't expect in an entry-level wine. Final production figures were as expected, 297,867 bottles. The wine was bottled between January and April 2025. This keeps its position as one of the best values in Spain.

30% whole bunch vinification, 20% new wood. A medium deep purple. The nose is immediately compelling with the notes of blood orange mixing in with the red berries. Rugiens= red soil=iron oxide = blood orange. This is an exceptionally complete wine, the tannins being fully folded in to the beguiling fruit. Very nicely done. Very persistent. Drink from 2033-2038. The 2015 Champagne La Grande Dame Rose saw the addition of 13% red wine, all coming from the same parcel as their Coteaux Champenois, a small parcel of less than a hectare. A deeper pink/salmon hue, it’s packed with aromas of wild berries, layered spice, and crushed flowers. The palate is ripe and full, with a powerful build that’s softened out by a rounded and supple mousse, and it has a lot of length and persistence, with attractive peppery spice on the finish. It should age gracefully over the coming decades.

Steeped cherry and raspberry fruit flavors are accented by tea rose, grated ginger and blood orange zest aromatics in this graceful rosé Champagne, in a vinous style. The 2015 La Grand Dame Rosé is a potent, vinous Champagne. Kirsch, red cherry, cinnamon, dried flowers, blood orange and rose petal fill out the layers. The addition of 14-15% stil Pinot from Bouzy lends notable textural depth in a rich, resonant Champagne that is quite impressive today. This is a decidedly Pinot-driven Rosé. Give it time in the glass to open.

Black cherry, licorice, chocolate, menthol, spice and new leather are all given an extra kick of intensity in this racy, voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon. Pliant, creamy and expansive with terrific depth, the 2017 is super-expressive and inviting. Hints of rose petal, mint and raspberry fruit add final touches of complexity.

Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, with a vibrant core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and lively acids, it's exquisitely elegant and harmonious, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. Stylistically, this wine exhibits a much closer affinity with the great Domaine de Chevalier of yesteryear than much of what was produced here in the early 2000s. It's a masterclass in what contemporary Bordeaux can deliver, and worth a special effort to seek out.

I loved the 2019 Domaine De Chevalier, which is unquestionably up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot that saw just 35% new oak, it sports a dense purple hue as well as a killer, quintessential Graves bouquet of darker black fruits, scorched earth, truffle, cold fireplace, tobacco, and graphite. More medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has brilliant purity, ultra-fine tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. It's not a blockbuster but has this incredible sense of class, balance, and finesse while being rich and concentrated. It's a gorgeous wine, and wine lovers will adore being able to compare this side by side with the 2015, 2016, and 2018 over the coming 3-4 decades.

The 2021 Clos Erasmus is not a shy wine and comes in at 15% alcohol but with a pH of 3.3. The search here is for balance, as power comes as a given in Priorat. It was produced with 70% Garnacha and 30% Syrah, mostly from 40-year-old vines, except for a small plot of around 85-year-old vines. The vineyards are certified organic, and they've practiced biodynamics since 2004 but never got certification. The vinification is simple and the same as for Laurel: the bunches cooled down for 24 hours before being sorted and destemmed, then the grapes were put into the vat, where they warm up and start fermenting with the indigenous yeasts. It was pressed and put in barrels, 40% of them new, where it underwent malolactic and aged for 18 months. It feels like the most elegant and ethereal Erasmus ever despite the 15% alcohol on the label. It's very young and feels a bit shy, slightly developing notes of Mediterranean herbs, wild berries and flowers and is a little closed but very harmonious and insinuating. It's medium to full-bodied, with very fine and elegant but abundant tannins. It does feel lighter than previous vintages, possibly the effect of the cooler year. 3,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023.

This note is written before the final blend of the 2021 Continuum. Deep purple-black in color, it hits the ground running with an intense nose of red and black currant preserves, lilacs, baker's chocolate, and graphite, leading to an undercurrant of black olives and red loam. On the medium to full-bodied palate it is very lively, grainy and super-concentrated, finishing long and shimmery.

The 2021 Continuum is flat-out gorgeous, but it's not for the instant gratification crowd either. Darker currants, graphite, crushed stone, and truffly goodness all define the aromatics and it's full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, with the tannic, age-worthy style of the vintage. Count yourself lucky if you have bottles in the cellar. It will benefit from 5-7 years of bottle age and should see its 30th birthday in fine form.

The 2021 Chablis La Moutonne Grand Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, although there seems to be some decent fruit behind it. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, lemon zest and a touch of tangerine, lightly spiced towards the finish that fans out nicely. Drunk in Florence with great friends at the end of our inaugural Connoisseur Week Tuscany, this was just utter heaven. Elderflower aromatics, wet stone, quince, green apple, totally moreish. Marchesi Antinori began bottling this Vermentino in 1996, putting the spotlight on a grape variety that does brilliantly in Bolgheri.

The finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is going to be one of the Legendary Mayacamas, although a more modern-day version. Sporting a vivid ruby, mostly opaque hue as well as sensational aromatics of crème de cassis, ripe cherries, graphite, crayon, and cedar pencils, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, flawless overall balance, ultra-fine, ripe, perfect tannins, and a great finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. The balance, purity, and elegance paired with the subtle, inward richness and power is something. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it was never short of spectacular, with its structure and tannins becoming more evident with air. It's far from the tannic beast that some vintages from this higher elevation terroir on Mount Veeder can be, and it clearly offers immense pleasure even today. Yet, it probably won't hit true prime time for another decade, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this be a 50- to 60-year wine. Bravo. Drink 2030-2080

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is fabulous. It's vivid and super-classic to the core, offering up an exotic mélange of dark fruit, espresso, dried herbs, iron, forest floor and incense. The 2021 is a quintessential mountain wine from Mt. Veeder, but there's just enough polish to wrap it all together while avoiding any sense of rusticity.
