Expressive and beautifully pure, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino offers a gorgeous, sweet perfume of perfectly ripe raspberry eau de vie, crushed roses, delicate baking spice, and well-integrated cedar spice. It is medium-bodied, though it is generous and round with fruit in a long arch, fine tannins, and a soft, stony, mineral texture. Polished with more ripe raspberry, oolong tea, and fresh thyme, it is approachable now but will certainly improve over the next 15-20 years.

The 2019 Nerello Mascalese Centennial Mountain Vineyard is racy and pliant right out of the gate. Succulent red cherry, plum, spice, blood orange, mint and a kiss of French oak are nicely pushed forward. Drink this effusive Nerello Mascalese over the next decade or so. This is an especially charming vintage for the Aeris Nerello Mascalese.

Bright ruby-red; more saturated than the 2014 version. Sexy burnished dark-chocolate oak complements aromas of dark berries, licorice pastille and fresh herbs. A superb balance of sweetness and harmonious acidity gives shape and definition to the rich, dense but restrained flavors of dark berries, bitter chocolate and licorice. A richer, deeper and perhaps even more youthful version of the 2014. Finishes with serious tannins but also plush and smooth, with licorice and bitter chocolate flavors coating the molars. Like the 2014, there's a slight warmth here but this wine has even more buffering material and length.

Understated yet beautifully refined, the 2022 Bianco Flors di Uis keeps the taster coming back to the glass with its pretty blend of lime sorbet, chamomile, spring flowers and white smoke. It flows across the palate with a sensation of liquid stone and minerals, elevated by lively acidity as a core of candied lemon is contrasted by tart green apple fruit. The 2022 finishes with a lingering concentration and tart citrus pith bitterness, yet through it all, the mouth is left salivating for more. Readers may have a hard time keeping their hands off in its youth, yet I advise patience. This Flors di Uis is still just a baby in its development and has bloomed beautifully with further bottle age. A fantastic showing. This is a blend of 55% Malvasia Istriana, 31% Rhein Riesling and 14% Friulano.

The 2023 Argali Rose is terrific, with a vibrant, refreshing, crisp style that brings plenty of fruit and depth. White peach, fresh strawberries, and floral notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a supple, elegant mouthfeel, bright acidity, and a clean finish. This clean, classy, incredibly well-balanced rosé is well worth seeking out and is perfect for a hot summer day as well as on the dinner table.

The garnet/red 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is potent on opening, with aromas of dried cherries, leather, cedar, and cocoa powder. Rounded and full-bodied, it expands on the palate with fleshy tannins and a ripe mid-palate and finish. It’s showing well now and is an approachable and generous style that I would prefer to drink over the next few years before it loses freshness. Drink 2024-2030.

The 2018 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba is a blend taken from Pajana and Gris, both of which fall into the Ginestra cru these days. Layered and pliant in the glass, the 2018 offers fine balance for the year, with lovely proportion and plenty of character. Dark cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint and spice build nicely in a Barolo of charm and seduction. It spent 24 months in cask. The Comune Barolo is the hidden gem in the range, in my view. I loved it.

"It's fair to say that no other country delivered value in this year's DWWA to match that sent over to us from Argentina, and this saturatedly dense, dark Malbec from the prized highlands of Gualtallary makes this point admirably. It's initially beefy and purposeful in aroma, the plum and sloe fruits emerging in purer form with time in the glass or the decanter.

There's admirable weight, lyricism and lift to those fruits: Gualtallery is never clumsy. Better still, in place of overt tannins and intrusive acidity there is a kind of sappy, stemmy freshness which combines the function of both texture and acidity -- and that, in fact, is the origin of the fruit's notable energy and charm. Value Best In Show wines rarely exceed the appeal you'll find here."
