The 2024 Chardonnay (Santa Maria Valley) is a blend of Bien Nacido and Maria Vista. Expressive and giving, it's another classic Bob Lindquist wine of beautiful restraint, with supple, layered textures. Spiced overtones of clove, dried herbs and lavender mingle with orange peel and marzipan, gaining presence with air. Gentle saline acids enliven the weighted finish. Classy.

The 2023 Chardonnay Phoebe is dusty and floral, with nuances of ginger and lime-tinged green apples forming its bouquet. Round textures and juicy acidity soothe as ripe pit fruits and a twang of candied citrus excite the senses. Flinty mineral tones linger as the 2023 tapers off wickedly fresh and floral, leaving a sensation of liquid stone.

The 2013 Ornellaia continues to put on weight with time in bottle. I have tasted the 2013 three times over the last few months and watched it blossom over that time. Fresh, vibrant and tightly wound, the 2013 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. There is striking purity to the aromas and flavors, along with plenty of tension and enough energy to reward cellaring.

This wine will be released in May 2016. The 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is an integrated and seamless blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Alex Heinz tells me that 2013 was a difficult vintage especially towards the early part of the growing season. It balanced out during the summer and allowed for steady ripening of fruit before the harvest. But 2013 was not as hot as 2011 and 2012 overall, and this edition of Ornellaia is beautifully tonic and shapely as a result. The bouquet is very developed in terms of aromas this year with beautiful notes of dark fruit, tobacco and spice. Those perfumes are just gorgeous. The mouthfeel is similarly intense with tannins that are still young, but are already silky and linear in nature. This vintage promises a long aging future.

The 2021 A Merced is surprisingly a little higher in alcohol than the 2020 I tasted next to it, despite the much cooler year. It fermented with 50% foot-trodden whole clusters in 1,000-liter oak casks with indigenous yeasts and a long maceration. It matured in used 225-liter French oak barrels for one year. It's a little earthy but also floral and elegant, combining that wild side that seems to be inherent to this place, as I've noticed it in the last few vintages. It's quite expressive and showy, very complete and balanced. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2022.

The 2020 Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore Ca' del Laito has an enticing bouquet that combines sweet sage and lavender with allspice, clove and dried black cherry. It is soothingly round and pliant, with juicy acidity and bright red berry fruit offset by a twang of sour citrus. Long yet incredibly fresh, the 2020 tapers off with rosy inner florals and a hint of nectarine, which I find wildly attractive.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Lylee pours a bright red color and offers notes of cherries, fresh herbs, roses, and dusty earth. The palate offers a chalky-textured grip to its tannins, balanced acidity, and a refreshing, medium-bodied frame. It’s a nicely styled Pinot Noir that can be enjoyed now or over the next 4-5 years.

The Lylee tells the story of the estate site, and all 8 acres of Pinot Noir, with fruit coming from each of the five blocks. The oldest plantings are from 1997. The estate has a mix of clones, 115, 777 Pommard Wadensvil. Black tea, earth and juicy bramble fruits, and dessicated rose petals. Dark red berries and sweet earth on the palate, with ample structure. There is a grippiness to the wines, and a touch of rusticity to this wine, in the most elegant sense. 17% new oak for 10 months.

Turnbull's blended 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is a super value and the rare modern-day Napa Cab under $100 that shows potential for further aging. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, it offers gently leafy notes, plus cedar, cherries and vanilla. Full-bodied, it's firm and reasonably tannic, with ample structure and a long finish.
