Translucent and layered, with captivating textural depth, the 2020 is positively stellar. Bright red-toned fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper, blood orange and dried rose petal come alive in the glass. This statuesque Barolo simply has it all. It's great to see the Mascarello family making truly pedigreed wines once again. To find a Monprivato of this exceptionally high level, readers will have to go back to the 1989. That's how outstanding the 2020 is.

The nose of the 2020 Barolo Monprivato is highly expressive and perfumed with notes of wild strawberries, fresh cut fennel, springtime herbs, and wet stones. The palate is seamless and similar to 2018 in terms of its elegance, but this wine has more structure, well-defined, even tannins, and a bit more body through the mid-palate while still retaining a very approachable and joyful feel. This will be a wine with a wide window for enjoyment and is one of the highlights of this vintage for me. It offers so much pleasure now, and I anticipate it will continue to improve over the coming decades. Bravo. Drink 2026-2056.

The 2018 Houyi Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is yet another absolute knockout from Bevan. This instantly grabs your attention with its insanely dark, inky color and striking aromatics, which are loaded with incredibally pure, ripe black cherries, boysenberries and black currants along with lead pencil, fresh dark florals, Asian spices, dark chocolate shavings and mountain sage nuances that fill the glass. This is just as sensational on the palate, with a gorgeous full body that is layered and beautifully polished. It goes on to deliver a luxurious mouthful of delicious ripe dark fruits, exotic spices, graphite and hints of dark cocoa powder which resonate all the way though the ultra-long, finish that is utterly seamless. This delivers on every level, and while it is absolutely captivating at this young age, it also has the structure to indicate a tremendous future ahead. This is a seriously impressive wine that should not be missed.

Coming from this famed rocky, red-soiled vineyard up on Pritchard Hill, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard was aged for 19 months in French oak barrels, 100% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant scents of fresh blueberries, black raspberries and warm black cherries followed by hints of cassis, wild sage and underbrush. Full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy texture supporting the muscular black fruit flavors with lots of red fruit sparks and mineral accents coming through on the persistent finish. 213 cases were made.

What an absolute delight. The 2014 can be enjoyed now or cellared. Dosage is 9 grams per liter.
