Ripe black fruits, pepper, leather, and spring flower notes all emerge from the 2019 Syrah Coastview Vineyard Terraces, a hidden gem of a Syrah that has more than a passing resemblance to a great Côte Rôtie. Medium to full-bodied, balanced, with a great mid-palate and ripe tannins, it's one of the standouts in this lineup. It will unquestionably evolve for 10-15 years.

Smooth as silk, it’s juicy and delicious, doling out ripe Morello cherry, cinnamon and vanilla before a minty finish. Velvety tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. This is one of the best wines of the vintage. Drink 2027–2034.

Rich black cherries and milk-chocolate notes give a ripe, saturated expression to this full-bodied wine, while well-integrated tannins add needed structure. Made from mostly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and sourced from three mountain locations, the wine is velvety, flavorful and almost sweet on the finish.

The 2021 Sauvage Vineyard Pinot Noir is supremely pretty. It's elegant and fine and still powerful, thanks to the Bannockburn area; however, the wine itself shows rose petals and spring flowers, graphite and pencil lead, white pepper and tapenade. Svelte and sleek, this is composed and detailed and so, so good. I am (mostly) resisting hyperbole and adverbs here. This is a standout wine from a superstar producer—an asset for the region and indeed the country (and the New World in general). 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Juicy and lively strawberries, red plums and lavender followed by vanilla beans, salted caramel and a touch of squeezed orange wedge. Mineral. Medium-bodied wine with fine velvety tannins and acidity. Very precisely framed wine with great harmony. It’s beautiful already but will age gracefully. Drink or hold.

The pale red 2023 Dr. Bruno Clarete Baga was produced with grapes from 25-year-old vines in Vilarinho do Bairro as a collaboration with Bairrada producer Quinta da Lagoa Velha, fermented and aged exclusively in concrete. It has a perfumed nose with shy notes of dry roses and tar, varietal, expressive and clean. It's medium-bodied and has contained ripeness and 12% alcohol. It's tasty, has very fine tannins and is surprisingly elegant and highly drinkable. It took me to Piamonte... 4,000 bottles produced.
