"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières 1er Cru has an elegant and restrained bouquet featuring light floral notes mixed with redcurrant and cranberry scents. The aromas have good delineation. The palate is smooth in texture with light tannins but not great depth. It has a touch of white pepper and clove toward the slightly attenuated finish. Fine, but it's early-drinking."

The 2014 Extra Brut Clos des Goisses is soft, open-knit and quite gracious. Readers will find a relatively accessible Goisses that will drink well with minimal cellaring. All the Goisses signatures are present, but they are dialed down. This cuvée typically shows more body, breadth and persistence, but those qualities were hard to come by in 2014. Hints of tangerine peel, marzipan, chamomile and spice linger. The blend is 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2023

The alluring bouquet shows fresh spring flowers, blueberry, raspberry, a hint of vanilla and subtle pipe tobacco in the background. Those delightful flavors continue and dance across the palate alongside semi-sweet cocoa, dark cherry, baking spices, and graphite. This is pure genius and a profoundly delicious cuvée, not only showcasing the talents of its makers, but the brilliance and freshness of 2019. We recommend decanting (minimum 30 minutes) if you pop a cork prior to 2025. I was blown away by the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon DVO, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc made as a collaboration between the team at Dalla Valle and Ornellaia. Remarkable notes of red and black currants, spring flowers, lead pencil, loamy earth, and classy oak all emerge from this young yet amazingly balanced, seamless Cabernet. Full-bodied on the palate and perfectly balanced, with silky tannins, it will probably be as good as it gets with 7-8 years of bottle age and is a magical Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that will evolve for 30 years or more.

This is the second vintage of this new joint project between Ornellaia in Tuscany and Dalla Valle in Napa Valley. This year’s blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, and the contributing sites are similar to last year, based around the AVAs of Oakville, Mount Veeder, and Coombsville. Very deep purple-black in color, the 2019 DVO has a wonderfully perfumed nose of lilacs, red roses, and stewed black tea over a core of red currant jelly, black raspberries, plum preserves, and clove oil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid line of very fine-grained tannins supporting the rich, perfumed black fruits, contrasted by crunchy red berries that deliver well-knit freshness. It finishes very long and layered. 550 cases were made.

Only the second release of this collaboration project between Dalla Valle Vineyards of Napa Valley and Ornellaia of Tuscany. A glass-staining dark ruby colour. Gorgeous red berry fruit aromas, white pepper, lavender, graphite, tobacco and sweet cedar. Full-bodied with immense concentration and exuding sweet black fruit and cassis, fragrant wild herbs, palate-etching pixelated tannins that build and build, layered by fractured slate, cocoa nibs, black olives and a long cedar-kissed finish. A magnificent youthful wine built for long-term cellaring.

Potpourri and bitter oranges dominate this complex wine. It’s bright ruby in the glass, with sweet spices and graceful depth. Firm on the palate with dusty yet ripe tannins, integrated delicate acidity and an amazing finish. Grace and power are well managed here. Long finish with rhubarb notes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

"This single-vineyard blend of Sangiovese and Merlot from the Bertinga vineyard, owned by Castello di Ama until 2015, is a superb wine. The Sangiovese is vinified in concrete then aged in large Stockinger casks, while the Merlot is vinified in stainless steel and aged in 500l tonneaux. It rests in bottle for four years before release. The result shines for its bright and juicy outlook, the alberese soil having its presence felt in the lovely sapidity and mineral tang which accompanies hedgerow fruits and herbal notes on the textured palate. The finish is full of bold, ripe red, black and blue berries yet carries elegance and freshness."

A juicy and lightly austere young red with blackberry, cherry and bark character on both the nose and palate. It’s medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins that soften at the end, but still make your mouth pucker. Give this two or three years to soften. Best after 2027.

A deep red hue, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli is more saturated with aromas of fresh leather, baked cherries, Amarena, mossy earth, balsamic herbs, and graphite. Full-bodied and well-balanced, with a seamless texture, plush tannins, and a velvety feel, it retains good freshness and a lot of length. It's more approachable now, and while it might not be the longest-lived of these wines, it's going to have a wide drinking window over the next 10 -15 years. I will say, while I prefer the freshness and the tension of the standard Brunello in this vintage, this has more polish and softer edges and is the more complete wine on paper.

The Altesino 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli has a rich and syrupy side that underlines the brightness of the fruit in this vintage. That core of dark fruit is framed by mineral notes of black slate and crushed river stone. There is a pretty mineral chalkiness on the palate that ties into the firm tannic structure of this full-bodied wine. The effect is elegant and sharply delineated. Aged in Slavonian oak casks, 12,000 bottles were made.

An intense red, delivering black cherry, blackberry, violet and orange peel flavors aligned with a dense profile. Though there's so much packed in, this red is virtually seamless, building effortlessly to the long, saturated finish. Menthol and mineral elements emerge as this plays out on the long, salty aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2045. 1,000 cases made, 350 cases imported.

This new special cuvée, launched for this biodynamic winery's 20th anniversary, is a finessed and beautiful bottling from vines on the estate's Greywacke river stones. Wild fermented, with time on lees in old Austrian oak and minimal sulfur, it's bright, upright and linear. Aromas of pineapple, peach, lime granita and white florals are underscored with fresh wild herbal tones like fennel and cilantro. The palate is slinky, with more tempered acidity than your typical Marlborough Sauvignon. The focus here is on texture, complexity and food-friendliness. A beautiful expression of place from one of Marlborough's leading producers. — Christina Pickard

The 2018 La Grande Dame is a very pretty wine that shows the contemporary style that is prevalent here these days. Floral overtones lift a core of citrus fruit, while marzipan, anise, mint, dried pear and spice open with a bit of coaxing. The 2018 is a delicate Grand Dame, as most Champagnes are in a vintage in which yields were exceptionally high. I especially admire the finesse here. Disgorged: September 2024.

A little deeper and probably more lactic than the 2019, but a little less exuberant. There are more dried herbs and minerals, with dried grapefruit and a touch of Aperol. Unique in style, which makes you think of a young Lopez de Heredia rosado (and you wouldn't be surprised if you find who makes this). Textured, full and harmonious despite higher alcohol. If sunshine could be bottled it would be this. Aromas of fresh succulent stone fruit, a hint of yeast, citrus blossoms and notes of quince on the nose. The mousse is creamy and light with baked red apples, blood orange zest, white grapefruit, sticky caramel and layered salinity with a mouthwatering finish. It will bring a smile to your lips.
