30% whole bunch vinification, 20% new wood. A medium deep purple. The nose is immediately compelling with the notes of blood orange mixing in with the red berries. Rugiens= red soil=iron oxide = blood orange. This is an exceptionally complete wine, the tannins being fully folded in to the beguiling fruit. Very nicely done. Very persistent. Drink from 2033-2038. The palate is tender and refined, medium- to full-bodied, with supple, chalky tannins and a delicate yet substantial thread of dark fruit. A beautifully pure and energetic expression of baga. Sourced from three vineyards, 100 to 140 years old, planted on clay-limestone soils. The grapes are partially destemmed, fermented in open wood lagares, and aged 12 to 18 months in 500- and 1,500-liter used oak barrels. From biodynamically grown grapes, Demeter and Ecocert certified. The 2021 Gran Malbec hails from Campo Los Andes and was aged for up to 18 months in new and used French oak barrels, foudres and stainless steel tanks. It offers precise fruit aromas of plum, vanilla and cedar, complemented by hints of toffee and jarilla. The ripe dark fruit and creamy texture, along with polished tannins, deliver a delicate mouthfeel and a savory finish. This is a well-calibrated Malbec with a Bordelais nod.

The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Rouge is nicely focused and quite floral in style, offering plenty of juicy red cherries and wild strawberry fruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with ample red fruit and gentle grip. There is a pleasant "verticality" to this modest Pernand that delivers plenty of sapidity on the approachable, pliant finish. For the price, this is worth seeking out. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.

After a break in the tricky 2020 vintage, Escobal is back in 2021 with an impressive release. Hailing from a sand and gravel-based parcel at 547 metres in Samaniego, it's a floral, very lightly wooded Tempranillo with crunchy black cherry and strawberry fruit and sculpted tannins.
