2020 Chateau Cantenac Brown Margaux Blend from France
#141635 750 mL
2020 Chateau Cantenac Brown Margaux
97 Antonio Galloni - Vinous
The 2020 Cantenac Brown is a knock-out. A Margaux of towering intensity, the 2020 is dense and vertical at the same time. It’s a combination that works so well. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and cloves all saturate the palate. There's real depth and concentration here from the summer heat and small size of the berries, but at the same time the 2020 has more freshness and energy than some recent years. There have been quite a few changes here in recent years, starting with a new parcel on the Margaux plateau that entered the blend in 2019 and move towards lower toast levels in the barrels. Cantenac Brown remains a potent, opulent Margaux, but 2020 has a measure of classicism as well. Superb.
96 Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Deep, dark and rich, the wine is packed from start to finish with layers of lush, polished, ripe, sweet, pure, black and dark red fruits, flowers, espresso, hints of chocolate and oceanic influences. There is a beautiful sense of symmetry, purity, freshness, length and lift that already expresses its essence. The finish continues with its layers of ripe, opulent, yet refined fruits. This is a top vintage for Cantenac Brown that will age gracefully for 2-3 decades. Drink from 2026-2055
96 Jeb Dunnuck - jebdunnuck.com
The 2020 Château Cantenac Brown showed beautifully and is a serious, concentrated, powerful Margaux that's going to need bottle age. Ripe blackcurrants, toasty oak, ripe tobacco, and dried flower notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, balanced mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It shows the more focused, slightly understated style of the vintage, yet everything is in the right place, it has terrific purity, and it’s just a brilliant Margaux. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it never put a foot wrong. It will hit its prime drinking window in 7-8 years and evolve for two decades.
96 Roger Voss - Wine Enthusiast
This grand estate that recently changed hands has produced a seriously promising wine. Bold black fruits and dark tannins are just beginning a fine interplay, reinforced by the wine's acidity. Expect a good future for the wine.
95 James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com
Plenty of blackberry, spice, iron and crushed lead pencil aromas follow through to a full body with chewy, velvety tannins and a rather cool side to it. Crushed stone and slate undertones. Try after 2026.

97 William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"The remarkable 2021 Montrose gets my nomination for the title of "wine of the vintage" in the Médoc. Wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of cassis and dark berries mingled with subtle hints of mint, orange, pencil shavings and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered and multidimensional core of fruit underpinned by beautifully ripe, refined tannins. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, it entirely transcends the limitations of the year. This young classic, reminiscent of the estate's 1996 but far better, is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot."
95-96 Jonathan Choukroun - Vert de Vin
The nose is elegant, delicate and reveals intensity with finesse, freshness, a lovely airiness, attention to detail, a fine floral character and a lovely multi-layered quality. There are notes of pulpy boysenberry, fleshy gariguette strawberry and more lightly fleshy/acidic red berries, a hint of blackcurrant as well as discreet minty hints, lily, Madagascar pepper and a discreet hint of vanilla/roasted. The palate is nicely conducted, focused, precise and reveals freshness, tension, accuracy, a nice freshness, minerality and purity. On the palate this wine expresses notes of almost roasted cherry, fresh raspberry and more slightly juicy/acidic blackcurrant combined with hints of fresh flowers, vanilla, toastiness, a discreet hint of crunchy berries, fine graphite/minerality almost saline, a subtle hint of toastiness, toasted hazelnut. The tannins are sapid and supple. A fine mellowness and a very fine chewiness on the finish/persistence.
95-96 James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com
A very classy and refined Montrose with excellent length and a compact, medium-bodied palate, showing fine, silky tannins and a fresh, bright finish. Lots of currant, blackberry and tar at the end, as well as some graphite. 62% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.
95 Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Deep in color, especially for the vintage, you find tobacco leaf, black cherry, pencil shavings, cedar, spice, and dark fruits appearing in the perfume with no effort at all. There is a richness in the palate. The fruit is ripe, fresh, vibrant, and chewy, with lift and energy in the mouth that carries through to the finish. As all fans of Montrose know, the wine more often than not requires decades of age before it is ready to taste, but 2021 is a different beast, allowing you to enjoy it with just a few years before it begins to be fun to taste. The wine was made by blending 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, 13.1% ABV, 3.7. Yields were 38 hectoliters per hectare, with 40% of the harvest going into the Grand Vin. The harvest took place from September 21 to October 6. Drink from 2028-2055.
95 Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
This has depth on the palate, inky purple with grilled almond, fennel, cassis, blackberry, bilblerry, waves of fruit set against strong, austere tannins that give excellent structure but not a lot of generosity. This is a serious, signature Montrose that is not an early drinker. Juicy on the finish, one to recommend. 55% new oak. Pierre Grafeuille has come on board as director since March 1, and will be taking over fully from Hervé Berland as of October 1.

93+ Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The entry-level Poggio al Tesoro 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Il Seggio opens to a dark, inky appearance and aromas that recall slate, pencil shaving, curry leaf, sweet blackberry and purple fruit. Medium yellow green, silver reflections. With some flower honey lined yellow tropical fruit, delicate after caramel, a hint of clementines, inviting bouquet. Good complexity, fresh acidity structure, mineral-salty, balanced and elegant, white stone fruit in the finish, remains good, firm finish.
89 Wine Enthusiast
This leans towards the herbal side, with hints of chive and coriander, even a bit of smoke, but there is a good amount of citrus fruit as well. Hints of Indian spice and sea salt mark the finish. — Aleks Zecevic

What an aromatic roller-coaster ride. The first sniff of the glass yields bright red cherries and orange zest. Then you get a burst of roasted red peppers, followed by a shot of espresso. Restrained acidity and velvety tannins accompany raspberry, smoked cherry and earthy oregano flavors. Great value here.

94 Antonio Galloni - Vinous
The 2019 Le Boucher, David Arthur's Cabernet Franc-based blend is terrific. A whole range of floral/savory flavors and red berry fruit are really popping today. Dried herbs, mocha, herbs and Franc aromatics open with a bit of coaxing, but the 2019 needs time. The 2019 is beautifully done.

94 Eric Guido - Vinous Media
The 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Vigneto Alto TB is youthfully inward and coy, with nuances of sweet exotic spice, minty herbs and wild strawberries. This is cool-toned, with vivid red berries and saturating notes of cinnamon and clove carried by brisk acids that not only add vibrancy, but also a juicy sensation throughout. Grippy tannins slowly mount toward the close under an air of tobacco and dark inner florals. The 2011 finishes structured and remarkably long with salted licorice and violet candies.
