This new special cuvée, launched for this biodynamic winery's 20th anniversary, is a finessed and beautiful bottling from vines on the estate's Greywacke river stones. Wild fermented, with time on lees in old Austrian oak and minimal sulfur, it's bright, upright and linear. Aromas of pineapple, peach, lime granita and white florals are underscored with fresh wild herbal tones like fennel and cilantro. The palate is slinky, with more tempered acidity than your typical Marlborough Sauvignon. The focus here is on texture, complexity and food-friendliness. "The 2013 Reserva Viña Tondonia is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, grown in the calcareous soils of the Tondonia meander in Rioja Alta. Aged extensively in American oak, it offers restrained black fruit, wild herbs, balsamic hints and sweet spices with gentle cedar and vanilla notes. Medium-bodied with chalky grip and a layered, tertiary finish, this is a benchmark classic—refined, enduring and unmistakably Tondonia."

"Every bit as good as the 2019, although in a slightly more concentrated, burly style, the 2020 Château Sociando-Mallet is close to an even split of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a splash of Cabernet Franc, all from vines located just north of Saint-Estèphe. It brings lots of ripeness and richness, with darker currants, plums, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and graphite-like aromatics that build nicely with time in the glass. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied Haut-Médoc revealing a deep, layered mid-palate, ripe, sweet tannins, plenty of concentration, and a great finish. Where the 2019 is silky and elegant, this is more in your face and foursquare, and it's mostly potential at this stage, although it clearly offers pleasure even today with its wealth of fruit. It's going to hit maturity around a decade after the vintage and, I suspect, will keep for 2-3 decades."

The 2020 Sociando Mallet has retained its impressive aromatics from its showing in barrel with beautifully defined blackberry and raspberry fruit, pressed violet and light cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm backbone, a little powdery in texture, fine backbone with ample freshness and tension towards its graphite-infused finish. Bravo!

The 2020 Sociando-Mallet is very attractive, exhibiting aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of pencil shavings, loamy soil, tobacco leaf and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with lively acids and powdery tannins, it's a strong effort from a site that always does well in warm vintages. The 2020 is a blend of 53% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc.

One of the modern classics for d’Arenberg, this is fermented with a high proportion of lightly pressed viognier skins and then has shiraz added late in the elevate to tone the viognier influence into balance. The aromas are fresh, richly spicy and lead by exuberantly ripe blackberries and dark plums with toasted spices and meaty elements. The palate has such richness and exotic, powerful tannins carry ripe dark plums and berries long and deep. Impressive depth and composure. Drink over the next decade.

The 2023 Chardonnay is absolutely brilliant. Sculpted and vibrant, with tons of class, the 2023 is superb. It offers a striking combination of energy, tension and power, but with a feeling of weightless elegance that is palpable. The 2023 was barrel-fermented and aged in heavy-toast French oak, 90% new, but the oak imprint is really quite minimal.
