Very firm and deep, extremely complex, fresh and precise, somewhat leathery and tobacco-like, also iodine on the nose, ripe, partly dried red and black berries with dried floral aromas, pepper, allspice and some Cheyenne pepper, dried mushrooms and a little undergrowth. Tight, concentrated, tart, yet extremely juicy fruit, present, ripe tannins and a certain acid bite, dense and persistent on the palate, tarry notes, a little tobacco, allspice and pepper, deep and complex, restrained power. Great.

The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable.

This is a wine that reminds us why we love the fermented grape in the first place. From the heady, hopelessly charming perfume of mixed berry compote, peppery spice, sage and dried flowers on their stalks, to the wonderfully bright acidity that plays alongside taut, sinewy tannins and tangy berry, floral and herbal notes—it's hard to resist.
