The textbook traditional red 2019 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza was produced with their classical blend of Tempranillo with small percentages of Garnacha and Graciano. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in used American oak barrels following the most orthodox tradition, for two years, a lot longer than required to obtain the category. It has spicy notes, a hint of cigar box and forest floor and is a powerful and ripe year, when the wine achieved 14.36% alcohol and good freshness and acidity. It has a medium to full-bodied palate with a chalky mouthfeel, fine tannins and a slightly dusty and rustic touch that would welcome food. It was bottled in May 2022.

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Fission is packed with scents of blackberry, coffee, dried savory herbs, lavender, mocha and spice. This potent, strapping Moon Mountain Cabernet packs a pretty big punch. I would give the firm Moon Mountain tannins a year or two to soften. Overall, the 2020 is a fine showing in this challenging vintage.

On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins and a crunchy texture that spans the breadth of the palate. From a site thought to possibly be a 60-million-year-old sand dune and the estate’s sandiest vineyard site (hence the name), the jeweled ruby-hued 2022 Pinot Noir Silice offers compact notes of black raspberries, baking spices, and tangerine and is highly perfumed with rocky earth. Medium-bodied, it has a more linear feel and is long on the palate, with ripe tannins, a more gravelly texture, and a great, savory finish. Elegant and compact at the same time, it can be enjoyed over the coming 15 or more years.
