These notes transform beautifully on the medium-to full-bodied palate, which is finely delineated. The firm, fine tannins frame a deeply penetrating core of red berry fruit and spices, complemented by the classic cool Coombsville wild herb character and a lengthy finish of graphite and loamy earth. A truly lovely effort in 2022.

The estate has a mix of clones, 115, 777 Pommard Wadensvil. Black tea, earth and juicy bramble fruits, and dessicated rose petals. Dark red berries and sweet earth on the palate, with ample structure. There is a grippiness to the wines, and a touch of rusticity to this wine, in the most elegant sense. 17% new oak for 10 months.

The bouquet offers redcurrant, myrtle and fragrant herbal notes of fresh rosemary and thyme, evoking the herb garden that lines the walkway to the estate’s newly inaugurated tasting room and visitor center. This wine offers phenomenal value.

The 2021 Granito del Cadalso has more fruit and is rounder, more approachable-looking, from locations in the valley that deliver that profile. It fermented mostly in concrete vats, destemmed and with indigenous yeasts, and had an élevage in concrete of approximately six months. It has notes of red berries and herbs, with purity and a gentle mouthfeel through very fine, chalky tannins. 4,800 bottles were filled in April 2022.

Rainier cherry, leather, and cedar aromas set the tone, followed by dark raspberry and black tea flavors. There's plenty of acidity here, and the tannins are as velvety as a lounge singer's crushed velour jacket. The wine's finish is nice and long. Eventually, with air time, your patience will be rewarded as flavors of mocha and cardamom arrive on the scene.
