Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2025 Malescot St. Exupéry prances out with gregarious notes of juicy blueberries and black raspberries, leading to hints of violets, mossy tree bark, and camphor. The medium-bodied palate is intense with shimmery blue and red berry flavors, supported by ripe, fine-grained tannins and great tension, finishing long and perfumed. Stunning!

It's impossible to read this label and not think of Nick Cave, which is a great way to start I suppose. The 2020 Red Right Hand is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Tempranillo, although the order of these varieties changes with the seasons. This is herbal and sweet, with a soft core of fleshy fruit. It's not long or complex in any significant way; the Tempranillo feels like a microscopic cog in the overarching plan, which is a pleasing thing, given the supple flow of Shiraz and Grenache from Margaret River, from whence the fruit for this wine hails. Pleasant drinking here.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Moon Mountain District includes two blocks from Monte Rosso in this appellation blend. In the glass, it pours a saturated, youthful purple color and is ripe in this vintage, with pretty and pure aromas of fresh lavender perfume, blackberries, wet stones, mountain herbs, and some red-fruited highlights. It’s full-bodied, approachable, and well-defined in its structure, and it retains refreshing acidity, ripe tannins, and an even feel through the finish. It’s an impressive and well-balanced wine in this hot vintage, with a wide drinking window to enjoy over the coming 10-12 years.

Outstanding in this challenging vintage, the 2020 Top Source Red Wine combines 60% Grenache with the remainder Syrah. This quite honestly smells like a Cayuse wine. The range of aromatics is really outstanding with Umami, hoisin sauce, wet stone, black truffle crudo and suggestions of boysenberry sauce. The palate is beautifully textured, with fantastic finesse and length. The combination of weight, finesse and flavor/aromatic range is downright stunning. Do not sleep on this beauty. The 2020 Red Wine Columbia Valley is savory, with a burst of crushed ashen stones and dried blackberries accentuated by spiced citrus and camphor. This is silky-smooth and pliant. Crunchy mineral tones complicate vividly ripe red and blue fruits. The 2020 finishes incredibly long, crisply refreshing with a Violette pastille nuance that lingers on and on. The Columbia Valley Red Wine is juicy and fun yet full of character. It's a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah refined in all neutral oak.

This is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, with a sizable portion of that fruit clearly coming from the stones in Walla Walla Valley. The aromas are exuberant, leading with notes of peat, fresh and dried tobacco, olive brine, crushed violet, wet rock, and a whiff of tangerine. There’s pleasing delicacy while still plenty of intensity to the soft-feeling, savory and umami-filled flavors, accented by olive and mineral notes. The finish sticks around for at least a 30-second count. It’s a stunner and a rare find at this price. 13.5% alcohol. 926 cases produced. TCA-free micro-agglomerated cork.

Terrific fruit — respectfully grown and vinified — then aged and finished with impressive skill. That’s what you get for your money in this wine, and it is a thing of beauty. To be clear, beauty is not what everyone seeks when buying premium wines from Napa, and if the automotive equivalent of what you’re seeking is a Hummer, you might be better off with another choice. But if a BMW is more your thing, this could be what you’re after in a current release at a high level. Fully 50% of the 110 barrels of this were new, but you’d never know that from the wine unless you had additional information about the toast level of the barriques or the time the wine spent in them, and the tech sheet I have at my disposal won’t enable me to clue you in on that. But really, given that the character of the finished product is what matters, who cares? Winemaker Steve Rogstad has managed to turn out a very serious and age-worthy Cabernet that places the pure core of fruit at center-stage, with all the winemaking accents right where they belong — as accents in the wings. As this opens with aeration, you can find the cooperage expressing itself with subtle spiciness and toastiness, but there is no icky vanilla or distracting charred notes in this wine — and I checked it again and again to assure that you won’t find them, either. The tannin management is as skillful as the wood influence, making this already wonderful with decanting and a pairing with fairly serious food — or just a nice piece of cheese.
