The 2019 Chianti Classico is a very pretty, easygoing wine. A burst of sweet red fruit, cedar, tobacco, leather and mint are nicely amplified. This is an especially aromatic, light-bodied style. My preference would be to drink this on the early side.

The second wine of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a wine for claret drinkers rather than points junkies. Typically floral and refined, with very gentle oaking, it’s a more serious wine than it seems at first, showing supporting tannins, a twist of vanilla spice and refreshing acidity. Drink: 2020-25

This is a very enjoyable wine. There’s subtle and welcoming grilled oak on the nose with smooth brambly fruits and acidity that is present but balanced. The tannins are well integrated with touches of menthol on the finish and a certain restraint that give clues to the appellation. It definitely works as an entry point to the main Grand-Puy-Lacoste bottling. Harvest was from 18 September to 4 October. 45% new oak.

Opening up beautifully with time in the glass, it has a classic, round, sexy 2019 mouthfeel, velvety tannins, background oak, and a great finish. It’s a clear standout in this lineup and will evolve for 15-20 years.

"The 2015 Reserva Quinta da Falorca Lagar is a blend of dozens of clones of Touriga Nacional (70%), Alfrocheiro (15%) and Tinta Roriz (15%) aged for 18 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14% alcohol. When you want a Burgundian experience in Portugal, Dão is where you are mostly likely to find it, even without Pinot Noir. Textured, elegant and very sensual, this is a perfectly constructed Reserva that is easy to drink now, but it still has plenty of room for improvement. The tannins are evident now, but they have moderated to a point where this is quite drinkable. As this aired out, it became ever more appealing, acquiring complexity and gravitas. This still has plenty of upside potential if you want to cellar it for a couple of years more. There were 7,000 bottles produced."

"The 2012 Viña Tondonia is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, cultivated on the meander of the Ebro River in Rioja Alta. Dry and lean, the fairly chalky texture lingers long, concluding with a compact, flavorful and lasting finish. The 2012 is a beautiful old-school Rioja."

"The 2012 Viña Tondonia Reserva comes from a very dry year, with 25% less rain than the average (at the time), resulting in lower yields of very healthy grapes that delivered wines with nice balance between alcohol and polyphenols, making it very apt for the aging in barrel. It had a slightly longer élevage in barrel, six years. The wine is aromatic with a developed profile, spicy and tertiary (forest floor, a touch of brick dust and iodine), complex and nuanced. The palate is full and round, with polished tannins and a long, dry finish. It has a textbook Tondonia nose and profile. 250,000 bottles produced."
