""The new release of the Ployez-Jacquemart non-vintage Brut is outstanding on both the nose and palate. The blend is made up of sixty percent pinot noir and pinot meunier, combined with forty percent chardonnay. The bouquet is deep, quite marked by its red grape components and beautifully complex, as it jumps from the glass in a blaze of ripe apple, blood orange, fresh-baked bread, caraway seed, citrus peel and a very complex base of minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and snappy, with a great core of fruit, bright acids, great focus, very fine mousse and exceptional grip on the very long, minerally and intensely flavored finish. There is a depth and flavor authority here that is most rare in Brut NVs, and as good as this wine is today, it will only get better if cellared for a few years. Superb bubbly."

"The 2024 Collio Pinot Grigio from Livio Felluga shows a delicate pink, onion-skin hue from a brief four- to six-hour maceration. Sourced from five parcels across Rosazzo and Cormons, the wine balances ripe and candied fruit—apricot and redcurrant—with saline, iodine and lightly metallic mineral notes. Partial malolactic fermentation and lees aging add a subtle creaminess, while the palate remains fresh, firm and finely structured with a touch of herbal complexity and a clean, mineral finish."

There is a savory, almost salty side of the 2021 Superior Tinto that makes it very tasty and adequate for food. It was produced with 40% each Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz and 5% Sousão from a less warm vintage. The wine is more serious and fresher, with a moderate 14% alcohol and a polished mouthfeel. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

This fluid red is suave and harmonious, with flavors of pureed boysenberry and black cherry gliding across the palate. Limber, sculpting tannins and balsamico-laced acidity are a supple frame, and accents of stone, wild sage, sassafras root and pepper linger on the fragrant finish. The Giovanni Rosso 2022 Etna Rosso Contrade Nuove has a little more textural heft with dark fruit aromas due to the warm summer growing conditions on the volcano. This vintage was hot but cooled down by rain at the right times. Vintner Davide Rosso says that Nerello Mascalese tends to go into reduction and can produce green tannins. His solution is to allow more oxygen in winemaking with the use, for example, of amphorae, which tend to be more porous. Conical oak vats and stainless steel are also used. This pretty wine offers bright fruit, cherry and crushed roses.

Tasted at the Palmères de Castillon event, where I was a jury member, and this was one of the wines picked out blind. I checked it against a different bottle at home later, and suggest that it is given at least half an hour in a carafe, as it remains fairly closed, but once again this is proof of the quality of 2022, and it's a seriously impressive wine that offers wonderful value. I'm always a fan of Clos Puy Arnaud, and you get the deft precision of the winemaking here, coupled with ripe blueberry and raspberry fruits, liquorice, black tea, pomegranate and slate-scrape tannins.

The 2022 Clos Puy Arnaud is a dense, extroverted wine. Inky dark fruit, licorice, menthol and cloves are all amplified. Usually Clos Puy Arnaud is more refined, but in 2022, the vintage dominates and speaks loudly. Even so, this is a compelling offering. I look forward to tasting it with bottle age.

Aromas and flavors of butter roasted nuts, nectarine, and grassy earth with a supple, vibrant, effervescent, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a tingling, long finish with accents of clementine, green apple, and limestone. A vibrant, spot-on Cava that captures the flavor, versatility and charm of the region and category.

"Pale, healthy color. Bright, nuanced aromas of citrus fruits, minerals and vanilla. A soft, moderately sweet fruit bomb of a Champagne, with pear, apple, peach and pineapple flavors nicely shaped by harmonious acidity. Finishes chewy and persistent. I'm not usually a fan of off-dry Champagne, but this is clean and lively."

This luscious, dense red is packed with cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and violet flavors. Its tannins are ripe and refined, while the vibrant acidity keeps everything focused. An iron streak weaves through the long, energetic finish. This is approachable now yet will be better in 2–3 years. Best from 2026 through 2045. 833 cases made, 400 cases imported.

The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva is a wine of pedigree and class. Aromatic, vibrant and delineated, the Riserva captures all the best qualities of the year. Crushed flowers, dark red/purplish fruit, mint, blood orange and pomegranate are some of the many notes that build in the glass. This is a sublime effort.

Classic Bordeaux nose with lots of cassis, lead pencil, ink and some earthiness. Plump and juicy on the palate with a medium to full body and silky tannins. Delicious, refined and really drinkable. Excellent length, too. An outstanding Haut-Medoc. Drink or hold.

This Cabernet Sauvignon, with the extra oomph of Petit Verdot, showcases dark fruits, sweet ripe blackberries, spices, and resinous forest notes followed by a savory finish. Tannins are abundant while sheathed in a fine polish. Even so, this wine will benefit from decanting, a meal, or further time in cellar. Enjoy in two years and for another two decades.
