Dense and sappy, displaying a well of kirsch, blackberry, boysenberry and mulberry preserves that unfurls steadily, laced with notes of apple wood, anise and black tea along the way. There's a pinpoint feel to this red, with its silky yet tensile structure supporting the deft, suave finish as late flashes of sassafras and iron peek out. Very much its own wine. Best from 2025 through 2045. 395 cases made.

Made up of Mitans and Pitures, though with part of Mitans pulled out. Fresh middling purple. The nose is quite discreet, and certainly better balanced, with a spicy peppery note to the fruit at the back of the palate, with good acidity. A refined and stylish Volnay 1er Cru that shows the benefit of years of biodynamic farming in its finesse. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.

"The 2021 Pinot Noir Homer Shea Vineyard is seductively spicy in character, with depths of woodland berries, cloves, star anise and cedar shavings forming its alluring bouquet. This is a model of elegance: a dense wave of ripe red fruits and spices is effortlessly lifted by brilliant acidity, and a primary staining slowly saturates the palate toward the close. The Homer finishes classically dry and crunchy, structured yet fresh and balanced for a long, steady evolution. While already a pleasure due to its beautifully integrated oak (43% new), the real magic will come forward with maturity."

"A barrel selection sourced from the best 10 barrels in a given vintage. The aromatics are rich and ripe. Notes of dried fig, kirsch and blackberry compote follow notes of dried violet and crushed stone. The palate is rich and powerful. Crushed basalt minerality is met with ripe blackberry, Italian plum and black cherry. Notes of espresso bean and rich dark chocolate follow. There is structure and power rather than finesse, chewy tannin and ample oak influence. The finish trails off."

"The 2022 Pegaso Granito has a showy nose, with plenty of red raspberries, and it opens up even more in the glass. It has notes of ripe red berry fruit, flowers and aromatic herbs. It's juicy and velvety, with the frontal tannins from the granite soils. It shows the ripeness of the year with 15% alcohol but a lower pH and higher acidity (3.24 and 6.57, respectively) because of the blocking of the vines that didn't have time to burn the acidity and the cycle was shorter. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins. 5,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024."

The 2013 Ornellaia continues to put on weight with time in bottle. I have tasted the 2013 three times over the last few months and watched it blossom over that time. Fresh, vibrant and tightly wound, the 2013 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. There is striking purity to the aromas and flavors, along with plenty of tension and enough energy to reward cellaring.

This wine will be released in May 2016. The 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is an integrated and seamless blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Alex Heinz tells me that 2013 was a difficult vintage especially towards the early part of the growing season. It balanced out during the summer and allowed for steady ripening of fruit before the harvest. But 2013 was not as hot as 2011 and 2012 overall, and this edition of Ornellaia is beautifully tonic and shapely as a result. The bouquet is very developed in terms of aromas this year with beautiful notes of dark fruit, tobacco and spice. Those perfumes are just gorgeous. The mouthfeel is similarly intense with tannins that are still young, but are already silky and linear in nature. This vintage promises a long aging future.

The 2022 Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Praino Frontemare opens slowly with a nuanced blend of citrus-tinged green apples, ginger and candied lime. This is cool-toned in feel, with soft textures and ripe orchard fruits that swirl across a core of brisk acidity. Its minerality comes through on the flinty, stony finish, tapering off with a subtle hint of chamomile.

The 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo continues this series of fine entry-level offerings from Burlotto. All the elements are so well balanced. Silky tannins and gracious mid-weight structure are the signatures. Cool blue-toned fruit, graphite, lavender and menthol lend notable aromatic presence and overall perfume.

Recently released (September 2025), Spottswoode's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps slightly bigger than usual for this property but still retains a sense of freshness. Loaded with cassis and blackberries, it's full-bodied, plush and voluptuous, yet also long and mouthwatering on the finish. Wonderfully forward but balanced, the juicy fruit is successfully framed by silky, soft tannins. It's a vintage to enjoy while waiting for the 2021 and 2023 to mature.
