Old-vine Grenache from a sandy portion of la Crau (ouest) shines in the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Petits Pieds d'Armand. Built along similar lines to the blended bottling but slightly deeper and earthier, it boasts wonderfully fragrant aromas of ripe berries, rose petals and fine leaf tea. It's full-bodied, supple and rich, with a long, velvety finish that hints at espresso and salted licorice.

"The NV (2022) Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs, a blend of equal parts Meunier and Pinot Noir, is rich and exuberant right out of the gate. Kirsch, white pepper, cranberry and chalk soar from the glass. Delicate and vibrant, with gorgeous aromatic presence and excellent balance, the Blanc de Noirs is especially fine today. Multiple disgorgements throughout the year."

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is in its infancy today, but it’s absolutely seductive and sizzling, stacked floor to ceiling with intriguing layers that just need some time to coalesce. Cooling mint, black raspberry, juniper, leather and high-percentage dark chocolate open gradually, unfurling into a soft-textured, caressing, broad wine of sheer class. Oak is very much at the forefront for now, but the juicy freshness and old-school/new-school juxtaposition are really appealing. The 2021 is certainly not short on pure, clear fruit. Give this a couple of years to settle into itself.

The 2022 Barbaresco is a pretty rich, heady wine. Dark cherry/plum fruit, cloves, licorice and mocha build as the 2022 shows off its considerable depth. This is one of the few 2022s that is quite resonant texturally. The aromatics could be more lifted and the tannins could use a bit more polish, but those qualities were next to impossible to come by in 2022. The inclusion of some juice from Riserva lots is a great help. All things considered, this is a stellar showing.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Larry Hyde is composed of 50% Calera selection, plus a mix of Dijon clones and Pommard, sourced from the vineyards around the winery (60%) and another parcel a couple of miles to the north that's a bit warmer (40%). There's very little whole bunch employed here, but the wine is floral and cherry scented, with delicate, ephemeral herbal and sous-bois shadings. Medium to full-bodied, it features a lovely silky texture that's just pure class and a long, elegant finish.

Aromas of ripe berry, wild rose, eucalyptus and dark spice lead the nose on the bold 2021 Brunate from Francesco Rinaldi. Firmly structured and full-bodied, the intense palate delivers mature black cherry extract, cool menthol and cinnamon before an anisette finish. Drink 2030-2041.

Deep ruby/plum-hued, the 2022 Côte Rôtie Amethyste brings terrific richness and concentration, with ripe red and black fruits as well as violets, smoked meats, rose petals, and incense nuances. Fermented with more stems than usual and aged in demi-muids, it's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This complex, floral, seamless Côte Rôtie will keep for two decades or more. Drink 2025-2045.

Aromas of dark wild berries, spices, blood and dark cherries preface the 2022 Cote Rotie Amethyste, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and structured Côte-Rôtie framed by powdery tannins and a dense, vibrant core of fruit. It concludes with a long, ethereal and licorice-inflected finish and was crafted from different estate plots. Fermentation was with 80% whole clusters, and it matured in used barrels. Perfectly crafted, this Côte-Rôtie is a wine that invariably rewards patience.

Packed with black fruits and balanced acidity, this is the second wine of Quinta do Vale Meão. Aged for 14 months in wood, its fruit is rich while also having freshness.
