The 2020 Léoville Las Cases has developed into a powerhouse. Then again, that is Las Cases. En primeur, I thought the 2020 was a bit shy, but its true personality has to emerge. Blackberry jam, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice, espresso and plum all saturate the palate. Vivid and explosive, the 2020 is dizzyingly rich, with plenty of Las Cases tannins that will require patience. I am not sure when the 2020 will be ready to drink, but it won't be anytime soon. Las Cases is one of the wines of the vintage in 2020, that much is pretty clear.

Another 2020 that's going to demand patience, the 2020 Château Léoville Las Cases is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend that includes 11% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot that was raised in 80% new French oak. It's a regal, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, flawlessly balanced 2020 with a pure core of cassis and darker currant fruits, a layered, seamless mouthfeel that carries substantial tannins, perfectly integrated oak, and subtle floral, mineral, and leafy herb nuances. Playing in the concentrated yet focused and structured style of the vintage, it's going to need a decade to hit the early phases of its prime drinking window and will have 50-75 years of longevity.

A linear and very racy wine with super fine tannins that run the length of the wine. Superb. It’s full-bodied yet really focused and polished with a length and intensity. Lots of currants and graphite. Very classy and fine. The new 1996. Give it six to seven years to come around.

This is more exotic and monstrous than the 2000. It is like a muscle builder, with lots of round and rich tannins and a core of dark fruits like black cherries and blueberries. Still very young, but structured and in need of five more years. Don’t touch this until 2015.

An incredibly fresh, lively 2003 (the pH is only 3.6 and the alcohol is 13.1%), this wine offers a dense ruby/purple color along with full body and a remarkable nose of black currants, kirsch, lead pencil shavings and vanilla. Opulent, full-bodied and close to full maturity, it is a seamless classic that will age for 15-20 more years. Kudos to the Delon family for such a brilliant achievement in a tricky vintage.

This vintage shows great precision at four years of age, though still very young and precocious. Deep mineral tones leap from the glass, the crushed slate, smoke and bright blue fruits accented by a savoury note of garrigue and lavender. Lovely elegance on the palate as black and red berry fruits are met with an earth-driven minerality. Umami notes of dried morel mushrooms, a touch of soy and chicory lead to wisps of pencil lead. While a joy to taste so young, this wine has a long life ahead.

90-92 Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2022 Volnay Village was almost completely de-stemmed and comes from the young vines in Santenots. It has a perfumed nose of black plum, raspberry fruit, and a touch of dried iris flower. This Volnay has crunchy tannins and pure black fruit with a slightly chalky textured finish. Lots of depth, considering this is a Village Cru, perhaps betraying its Santenot origins.

89-91 Jasper Morris, MW - Inside Burgundy

14 barrels made from 0.75ha, a comfortable return. Fifty percent whole bunch. Concentrated purple colour. A bucketload of dark raspberry fruit, but not too obviously stem infused. Excellent intensity, quite dark raspberry in style, good acidity, and fair length. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted: October 2023.

The NV Spark comes from 29-year-old vines planted in Jory soil. It is a blend of 48% Pinot Noir, 31% Chasselas, 9% Chardonnay, 6% Pinot Meunier and 6% Pinot Blanc, aged 11 months on the lees and bottled without dosage. It has a deep cherry-pink color and scents of green melon, peaches, tarragon and citrus peel, and the light-bodied palate is energetic and fruity with a refreshing finish.

Just bottled, the 2023 Pinot Noir Clima Frío offers up hints of sweet red cherry, pipe tobacco, cedar, mint and dried flowers. This is an especially savory style that reflects the blend of fruit from Presqu’ile (a cool site—all destemmed) and Yellow Fox Trot. If this is the appellation wine, I can't wait to taste the vineyard designates.

The 2010 Château Lynch-Bages is straight-up brilliant and shows the quality of this incredible château – as well as the vintage – beautifully. Still deep purple-hued, with a stunningly pure and classic Pauillac nose of cassis, darker currants, smoke tobacco, and lead pencil, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, polished yet substantial tannins, and an awesome finish. This beauty is up with the finest vintages from this château and has another 30-40 years of prime drinking.

Still a saturated ruby-black in hue, the 2010 Lynch-Bages offers up aromas of rich cassis fruit mingled with hints of pencil shavings, loamy soil and cigar wrapper. Full-bodied, deep and muscular, it's rich and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit that's framed by firm, powdery tannins and lively acids. The most brooding, backward Lynch-Bages of the decade and one of the real successes of the vintage, this is a vibrant, tightly wound wine that is still an infant at age 10. Readers with bottles in their cellars might try one now out of curiosity, but this 2010 won't begin to hit its stride until age 20.

This is tannic architecture fully realised in a glass, one to taste to understand just how muscular Pauillac can become. Even at 15 years old it is still closed and a little austere, even a little raw, but with zero doubt that it will smooth out. Punchy, liquorice root, black fruits, bilberry, crayon, crushed rocks, smoked earth, pomegranate, gunsmoke, curling violets as it opens.

While the 70% new oak is fully integrated, it will be even better in 10 years (the 2000 vintage is perfect today). The length is amazing. A regal wine requiring a regal dish. Try with beef Wellington.

The 2018 Xisto, released only in certain years, is a blend of 40% old vines (70 years), 30% Touriga Nacional and 30% Touriga Franca from vines planted in 1987, all aged for 20 months in 85% new French barriques. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. As gorgeous as the regular Tinto is, this is a step up, or two. It is a bit oakier but also more polished and better structured. It's easily as delicious, although the oak covers up some of that these days. This is approachable now because the tannins are very ripe, but it will be even better in a couple of years. That will allow some chance to pull in more wood. It does tighten a bit with air, so aging it can't hurt. It should age well. It has some things to prove in the cellar, but I'm leaning up today. There were 7,000 bottles produced.
