The 2024 Cincuenta y Cinco was sourced from vines planted in 1955 on sand-dominated soils with silt and a small amount of clay content. It offers a hauntingly multidimensional expression of the Chacra project with a weightless allure than sets it apart within an impressive roster of wines. It opens with a detailed, blue-fruited nose radiating violet and rose petal aromas with an undercurrent of turned earth. The palate deftly balances a sleek, suave profile with nimble energy and palpable grace, effortlessly transitioning into a long, nuanced, ethereal finish whose complexity and dimension dramatically juxtaposes its slender frame. While I feel the Treinta y Dos bottling offers a slightly more complete expression of the Chacra project, this is a spectacular example of Patagonian Pinot Noir and one to measure others against.

With delicate peaches-and-cream and salty limy margarita vibes, woven with smoke, flint and toasty lees influence, this shows Long Island character within a classical bubbly framework. It's a little hard at the edges and never quite achieves the opulence of its European counterparts but is nonetheless a classy fizz for any occasion.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Janeen is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon coming from Sage Ridge and Tench vineyard with 12.5% Merlot coming from Sugarloaf Mountain vineyard. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts with bold notions of crème de cassis, plum preserves and chocolate-covered cherries, plus hints of Chinese five spice, dried mint and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety in the mouth, it has loads of spicy sparks and a spicy kick on the finish. 310 cases were made.

Exuberantly fresh black fruit aromas are liberally laced with notes of earth, clove, anise and wood. The succulent yet muscular and powerful big-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while exhibiting seriously good length on the mouth coating and strikingly long finish. Note that this is very much built-to-age and a wine that may well require 20 years to reach its apogee. Excellent.

Medium garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon needs a little coaxing to bring out pretty notes of kirsch, redcurrant jelly, and juicy blackberries plus hints of rose oil, cinnamon stick, and underbrush. The medium to full-bodied palate is bright and cheery, with red and black berry layers framed by a chewy texture and refreshing line, finishing long and earthy. Nice!

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the wines of this very challenging harvest. Dark and imposing, the 2020 is packed with black fruit, cloves, leather, menthol, chocolate and dried herbs. This is an especially dense, potent Cabernet. There is some aggressiveness to the tannins, but that is the vintage. Overall, this is impeccably done, especially within the context of the year.

The 2020 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep and expressive nose, featuring a blend of ripe blackberries, boysenberries, and black cherries, accented by fragrant notes of dried savory herbs, anise, exotic spices, cocoa powder and a touch of dusty nuances all coming together beautifully to add wonderful complexity to the aromatics. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, dense, and structured with muscular tannins, that provide plenty of backbone to support the fruit. Layers of dark fruits, tobacco and spices are well-integrated, leading to a long finish. This is remarkable showing from Mayacamas in this vintage, and should be provide immediate drinking pleasure, but also thrive in the cellar for over a decade.

Tight, concentrated, tart, yet extremely juicy fruit, present, ripe tannins and a certain acid bite, dense and persistent on the palate, tarry notes, a little tobacco, allspice and pepper, deep and complex, restrained power. Great.

Medium gold-hued, with subtle but deep aromatics, the 2023 Chardonnay offers rich notes of orchard fruits, creamed corn, crushed stone, and exotic flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it has a pure, layered mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and a gorgeous finish. This incredibly impressive SLH Chardonnay will keep for 10-12 years. Aged 17 months in 40% new French oak, it benefits from air if drinking any time soon.

The 2023 Chardonnay is a powerful, super-phenolic, almost chewy white, but all of that texture is bedded on a base layer of crystal-clear, supple, super-ripe golden orchard fruit. Flint, orange zest, chamomile and yellow apple flesh out magnificently into a long, expansive finish that’s propelled by calibrated acidity. This is an unashamedly large-scaled Chardonnay, but it’s finessed through and through. A 17-month stay in 40% new French oak built loads of creamy texture and spicy complexity into the wine’s frame. The 2023 is a total showstopper.
