The 2021 Chablis La Moutonne Grand Cru is showing some reduction on the nose, although there seems to be some decent fruit behind it. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, lemon zest and a touch of tangerine, lightly spiced towards the finish that fans out nicely. The 2022 Côte Rôtie Côte Blonde is a stunning, flawless effort offering a complex array of red, blue, and black fruits intermixed with graphite, crushed stone, and wildflowers. Full-bodied, silky, and multidimensional on the palate, it has incredible depth, perfectly ripe tannins, and remarkable purity of fruit. This profound, age-worthy wine deserves 7-10 years of bottle age and will have 30+ years of prime drinking. The floral, perfumed, exotic, and incredibly seductive character here is reminiscent of Guigal's Côte Rôtie La Mouline. Don't miss this wine. Drink 2032-2062.

30% whole bunch vinification, 20% new wood. A medium deep purple. The nose is immediately compelling with the notes of blood orange mixing in with the red berries. Rugiens= red soil=iron oxide = blood orange. This is an exceptionally complete wine, the tannins being fully folded in to the beguiling fruit. Very nicely done. Very persistent. Drink from 2033-2038. The 2015 Champagne La Grande Dame Rose saw the addition of 13% red wine, all coming from the same parcel as their Coteaux Champenois, a small parcel of less than a hectare. A deeper pink/salmon hue, it’s packed with aromas of wild berries, layered spice, and crushed flowers. The palate is ripe and full, with a powerful build that’s softened out by a rounded and supple mousse, and it has a lot of length and persistence, with attractive peppery spice on the finish. It should age gracefully over the coming decades.

Steeped cherry and raspberry fruit flavors are accented by tea rose, grated ginger and blood orange zest aromatics in this graceful rosé Champagne, in a vinous style. The 2015 La Grand Dame Rosé is a potent, vinous Champagne. Kirsch, red cherry, cinnamon, dried flowers, blood orange and rose petal fill out the layers. The addition of 14-15% stil Pinot from Bouzy lends notable textural depth in a rich, resonant Champagne that is quite impressive today. This is a decidedly Pinot-driven Rosé. Give it time in the glass to open.

A blend of 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir (with 13% of red wine), the 2015 Brut Rosé La Grande Dame exhales a complex, elegant bouquet of red berries, flowers, spices, pastry and citrus blossom. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, it’s perfectly balanced with a pinpoint mousse, a delicate core of fruit and an ethereal, long and mineral finish. This lovely rendition of La Grande Dame Rosé could age well over the next decade.

The 2021 Gran Malbec hails from Campo Los Andes and was aged for up to 18 months in new and used French oak barrels, foudres and stainless steel tanks. It offers precise fruit aromas of plum, vanilla and cedar, complemented by hints of toffee and jarilla. The ripe dark fruit and creamy texture, along with polished tannins, deliver a delicate mouthfeel and a savory finish. This is a well-calibrated Malbec with a Bordelais nod.

The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc McGinley Vineyard is taut and finely cut from start to finish. Bright acids and clean citrus notes slice through a core of citrus fruit, white flowers, mint and white pepper in this gorgeous Sauvignon Blanc from Adam Tolmach.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Isabelle is a blend of multiple sites in the Au Bon Climat portfolio, taken from the best lots in the winery. It spent 23 months in 100% new oak, long by California standards. It offers tons of aromatic, floral and spice character, but I find the fruit a bit dried out and marked by sweet oak. Nonetheless, the Isabelle is a pretty distinctive wine.

Fresh and nicely framed aromas of red currants, stone and sweet tobacco. Medium-bodied with open-grained tannins and a creamy finish. Crunchy fruit. A blend of 77% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 5% malbec, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Very drinkable now, but can improve with age.

Comprising 100% Petite Sirah from Ridge’s Lytton Estate in the Dry Creek Valley, the 2021 Petite Sirah Estate is a brooding, savory, forbiddingly tannic red that clubs you over the head with power and intensity. Leather, oil-cured olive, lavender and sappy blackberry fruit run through this particularly rustic, animalistic edition of Lytton Petite. The fruit is plush and velvety beneath the monstrous structure, but it’s going to take a while to settle this beast down.

The 2021 Petite Sirah Lytton Estate opens with initial touches of tar and struck flint that give way to black cherries and currants, wild thyme, pencil shavings, coffee grounds and earth. Give it 3–5 years in bottle.
