There is warmth (generosity, plushness, etc.) in this wine, but the acidity is cooling and detailed. Slinky, supple and balanced, shaped by ductile, tissue-paper tannins, chalky and shapely, this is lip-smacking. 13.5% and perfectly ripe. So good.

Baked plum, cream and a touch of vanilla almost have an overtone of citrus. The palate is alive with white pepper spiciness, dense with ripe plum and red cherry, while a lactic note sets another aromatic accent. Fruit and flavour are concentrated yet the texture is very fine. Tannins are like starched velvet – rich, smooth and crunchy – and the aromas just swirl with heady abandon. This presses just so many pleasure buttons.

The straight 2021 Barolo from Francesco Rinaldi & Figli is an absolute stunner, starting with its beguiling fragrance that combines wild rose, Alpine herb, red berry, dark spice and a whiff of sun-warmed hay. All about finesse and flavor, the palate captivates with layers of wild strawberry, red cherry, star anise and crushed mint before a blood orange finish. It's bright and balanced, with vibrant acidity and a backbone of firm, refined tannins. This is still youthfully and austere and shows terrific aging potential. What a fantastic showing. Drink 2031–2041.

The 2020 Finca Genoveva Caíño is very different from the rest of the Caíño reds; in this case, it's closer to a Cabernet Franc, with explosive peppery aromas and a balsamic twist (even bay leaf, moss...), very complex and ever-changing in the glass. This is elegant, perfumed, aromatic and precise. This has to be the finest Genoveva Caíño to date. Bravo! It has a moderate 12% alcohol and great balance with very fine tannins. It matured in a seven-year-old 1,500-liter oak foudre for 24 months.
