I was eager to taste the 2021 Aro, a wine produced only in special years when the Graciano ripens thoroughly, as it represents a significant percentage of the blend here; the other grape used is Tempranillo. The grapes fermented in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in new French oak barrels for 18 months. This is their most exclusive wine; only 6,194 bottles were produced in 2021. It was bottled in October 2023. The next vintage will be 2022, but it was not made in 2023 or 2024.

"The 2023 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard is the last iteration of this single vineyard from the Ramey family, who is sourcing more fruit from their estate vineyards and other multigenerational family farms. What a way to go out—it’s intensely perfumed and expressive! It floods the senses with waves of matchstick, peach, pineapple, lemongrass and jasmine. The full-bodied palate is highly concentrated with hedonistic, flint-laced flavors. Its generosity is foiled by racy acidity, and it has a long, shimmery finish."

"The 2023 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard is powerful and quite savory. Orchard fruit, dried herbs, marzipan, white flowers and chalk all run through this potent Chardonnay. I find the Ritchie a touch aggressive in its contours and not quite as complete as the other Chardonnays in the range. This is the last vintage of the Ritchie Chardonnay at Ramey."

Blending 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, this polished red leans stylistically towards Bordeaux while retaining a distinctly Portuguese profile of fruit. The palate offers layers of juicy red berries framed by soft tannins and generous, slightly sweet oak that adds immediate approachability. Cabernet brings clear structure and drive, with a backbone defined by acidity, and on the finish there is a bright lift from a hint of salinity. Plush and polished, it will develop further in bottle. 2026- 2032

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is terrific, especially for a wine of its level and production. Aromatic, medium in body and impeccably balanced, the 2022 is seriously impressive. It is perhaps a bit more floral and lighter than most years, but its balance and overall harmony are beyond reproach. This is a strong showing. New oak is 45%, 27% French and 18% American.

"(45% pinot meunier, 25% pinot noir and 25% chardonnay, with the rest arbanne, petit meslier and fromenteau; disgorged in April, 2013): Bright straw. Pungent aromas of Meyer lemon, pear and fig, with a gingery accent adding lift. Sappy, penetrating citrus fruit and floral flavors are given a refreshingly bitter character by notes of pear skin and peach pit, with a waxy note coming up on the back half. A smoky nuance lingers on the finish, which shows very good clarity and length. Fifty-five percent of this blend is from 2010 and the rest is reserve wines, mostly from a solera that was begun in 1998." (12/13)

"This is not your typical non-vintage Brut. The Aubry brothers include ancient indigenous varieties, which make up five percent of the blend; pinot meunier accounts for 45 percent, the balance in equal parts pinot noir and chardonnay. Nearly half of the blend is reserve wine, half of that coming from a solera made up of vintages going back to 1998. If all that seems complicated, the wine is not. Instead, it tastes like an essential Champagne, with scents of chalk, oyster mushroom, pear skin and lemon pulp creating a bold surround-sound of flavor. There's purity to the expression and a healthy weight to the wine. Pour it with sea bass roasted with chanterelles." (12/13)

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is laced with dark-toned fruit, grilled herbs, menthol, spice, leather and tobacco. The 2022 is quite savory and on the delicate side, qualities that often take a few years in bottle to show themselves. Here, too, the wine's balance is impeccable.
