The 2020 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is just as memorable as it was last year. More than anything else, the 2020 is a Rüncot that prizes finesse over just power. Silky tannins, mid-weight structure and striking delineation further amplify that initial impression. Readers should note that Elio Grasso is releasing the 2020 ahead of the 2019. I can't remember ever tasting a young Rüncot with such finesse.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Larry Hyde is composed of 50% Calera selection, plus a mix of Dijon clones and Pommard, sourced from the vineyards around the winery (60%) and another parcel a couple of miles to the north that's a bit warmer (40%). There's very little whole bunch employed here, but the wine is floral and cherry scented, with delicate, ephemeral herbal and sous-bois shadings. Medium to full-bodied, it features a lovely silky texture that's just pure class and a long, elegant finish.

The 2022 Chardonnay Westside Farms Vineyard comes from grapes planted in 1989 on silty loam soils on Westside Road. The grapes were harvested on August 19, before the Labor Day heat wave, and the wine was barrel-fermented. Matured for 20 months in 20% new French oak barrels, it has slowly unfurling aromas of peach, ginger, cashew, honey and matchstick. The palate balances lush, honeyed flavors with fresh acidity, and it has a long, spicy finish.

Small berries in a late-ripening vintage yielded an unusually dense Zinfandel for this vineyard on the eastern edge of Lodi. The 2023 spent 11 months in neutral 500L puncheons, with no racking until bottling.
