The Altesino 2021 Brunello di Montalcino was a little shy when I tasted it, but knowing the track record of this estate, I have no doubt that the wine will flesh out with bottle age. Give it a year or two more. The bouquet offers blackcurrant and wild berry with a dark mineral note and grilled herb. Pressed violet also rises to the top of the wine, which is firmly structured and very lively in terms of mouthfeel. This popular release of 110,000 bottles ages in Slavonian oak casks only.

"The very pale 2025 Rosado, which I think is paler than ever, looks almost like a white, and rightly so, because it was produced with a majority of white grapes: 60% Viura, along with 35% Garnacha and 5% Tempranillo; hence, it's a clarete. Still very young and a little reductive, it has a subtle floral nose and a textured palate from the maceration with the white skins. It's tasty and finishes with an almost salty sensation. It has good freshness and balance and is very apt for the table. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2025."

The 2022 Chardonnay is creamy, ample and super-expressive. The 2022 spent 17 months in French oak, about 40% new. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and a gentle kiss of French oak infuse the Chardonnay with tons of character, offering lovely texture while retaining tons of freshness. It's a terrific wine, especially for the year.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Richaven is super-impressive. Rich, sumptuous and explosive, the 2022 is the most overt wine in this range. It's a style that works so well in exalting the natural exuberance of the Russian River. Dark fruit, mocha, licorice, incense and mocha all build into the dense, palate-staining finish. There's not much subtlety there, but that does not seem to be the goal, nor does it matter, to be honest.

The 2023 Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori is terrific. Succulent red cherry/plum fruit, espresso, spice, leather, tobacco and incense flesh out in the glass. It's juicy and forward, with tons of raciness and mid-palate density. Drink the 2023 over the next handful of years.
