This beautiful new 2022 Pinot Nor comes from the ‘La Cruz Vineyard’ which neighbors the Pacific Ocean in the Sonoma Coast AVA. Lachini has now been sourcing from this site for many years, as this saw a small portion of whole cluster fermentation. The resultant wine is jam-packed full of flavor, with good underlying tension. Pretty red fruits collide with tobacco leaf, refined tannins and shades of white pepper all line the palate. Finishing long this might be the finest edition of this wine made yet. Drink 2023-2033

Resting in 50% new French oak barrels for 14 months, the 2022 La Cruz Pinot Noir from Lachini pours a light purple-ruby core with a blueish rim. Immediately you are greeted with those wonderful Sonoma County Pinot notes of crushed huckleberries, blue plums, sweet Christmas spices, turned earth, graphite, and hints of graham cracker. Tannins are well-integrated and silky smooth while the perfect levels of acidity form the long finish. I love the fruit and earth notes you get on the mid-palate on the finish. 194 cases were produced.

A balance of the powerful wines of Red Mountain with an elegance of winemaking comes through in this Klipsun Vineyards Syrah from the renowned vineyard's Block 15. Inky and dark with singed violets, crushed stone, and a helping of petrichor leap from the glass exuberantly. Fruit follows close behind, notes of currant and spicy blood orange announcing this wine's layers and depth. A tang of dark berries rips across the front palate, with savoury chicory root spices and a dark, smoky bacon fat undertone. Pomegranate fruits and tinges of ironstone minerality carry this wine to a finish that honours the complexity and depth on display.

The Fattoria le Pupille 2024 Morellino di Scansano is led by Sangiovese with small percentages of Alicante and Ciliegiolo that bring extra brightness and energy. In Maremma, complex soils of volcanic deposits layered with ancient marine sediments define the character of the region, and for this wine, the Sangiovese is planted on sandstone soils that enhance elegance and aromatic lift, while other parcels feature pietra serena, red clays and limestone matched carefully to the appropriate variety. The bouquet offers redcurrant, myrtle and fragrant herbal notes of fresh rosemary and thyme, evoking the herb garden that lines the walkway to the estate’s newly inaugurated tasting room and visitor center. This wine offers phenomenal value.

The Lylee tells the story of the estate site, and all 8 acres of Pinot Noir, with fruit coming from each of the five blocks. The oldest plantings are from 1997. The estate has a mix of clones, 115, 777 Pommard Wadensvil. Black tea, earth and juicy bramble fruits, and dessicated rose petals. Dark red berries and sweet earth on the palate, with ample structure. There is a grippiness to the wines, and a touch of rusticity to this wine, in the most elegant sense. 17% new oak for 10 months.

The 2021 Granito del Cadalso has more fruit and is rounder, more approachable-looking, from locations in the valley that deliver that profile. It fermented mostly in concrete vats, destemmed and with indigenous yeasts, and had an élevage in concrete of approximately six months. It has notes of red berries and herbs, with purity and a gentle mouthfeel through very fine, chalky tannins. 4,800 bottles were filled in April 2022.

"Gandona's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Encosta features scents of crushed stone and pencil shavings layered atop ripe plums and black cherries. While it's full-bodied, with some grainy tannins, it's not unapproachable, with a long, dusty-textured finish. For those keeping track of the minutia, it was aged in two-thirds new French oak and there's a tiny proportion (less than 2% in aggregate) of other grape varieties: Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Previous vintages are still on the market for around $100, so this may be the rare affordable bottling from Pritchard Hill (1,050 cases produced)."

2023 DEEVO Red Blend is the acronym of the 5 people that together made the blend. This is tradition at Long Cellars and is done every year. The acronym is different every year but it is designed to be one of the best wines each vintage. The team (friends, colleagues, wine club members) work hard to find the best possible blend using 6 Bordeaux varietals. The masculine dark red has considerable depth of flavor and rich but structured texture. With the backbone consisting of 50% Petit Verdot, it's no wonder it finishes with firm tannins for a long finish. But the almost equal parts Cabernet and Malbec and a hint of Carmenere soften and balance the wine, giving it delicious layers of flavor and a robust mouth feel. This blend has both muscle and beauty, and will especially appeal to those who appreciate darker style Old World wines such as a well-made young Bordeaux. Expect notes of dark chocolate, espresso, blackberry, and cassis, with refined but very present tannins for a long dry finish.Sourced from Quintessence & Boushey Vineyards. 95 cases produced.

Offering a clean and bright fruit profile, the Fattoria dei Barbi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows plum, dark cherry and blackberry. The fruit presented in this vintage is fresh, velvety, nicely contoured and still tastes quite primary in nature. This bodes well for the wine's future bottle evolution. The tannins are slightly chalky but supported by rich texture. This is from a widely distributed production of 160,000 bottles that will hit the market in January 2024. Great job here.
