Brightness that brings to mind a spring day, with aromas of jasmine and freesia blown about on the breeze, fresh pear, lemon wedge in sparkling water, vanilla, Cheerios, and grandma’s potpourri. Fizzy lemon sparkles on the palate, alongside pie crust, vanilla, toasted almonds, jasmine tea, green pear, and savory oak and cacao; water emphasizes oily citrus. Aromas of pepper cracker, citrus buttercream frosted cake, and juniper blossoms with a satiny dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and an oily, warming, melange of fresh herbs, spices, citrus and wet stones on the long finish. Very vibrantly flavorful and artfully composed. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal

3+ The Whiskey Wash

Appearance: This liquid is a clear, pale gold with fine particulates. Nose: Cereal sweetness wafts up from the glass, taking shape as white flowers, overripe pear, and straw. The inner coil of a cinnamon roll comes through. Book glue lingers in the background. Palate: The attack is simple-syrup sweet, stretching to a mid-palate of, well, malt: toast with a few spots of burn. This whiskey is uncomplicated and clean, finishing with ripe peach. Summary Final thoughts: I'm not really sure how this bottle ended up in front of me, but it's OK that that it is. The whiskey is decent. Given the variation in American single malt, I'll take it. Secrets and all.

Number 2 Whiskey of 2024.... The flagship of Bruichladdich’s Luxury Redefined range is packaged in a molded fiber cocoon. Distilled in 2004, this whisky includes the distillery’s first use of Islay-grown barley. It was matured on Islay, mostly in bourbon barrels but also in a combination of sauternes and port casks. Aromas of honey, vanilla, and creamed coconut are wrapped around floral flourishes, with peach, melon, guava, and ground ginger. Complex layers of gooseberry, melon, and banana mingle with butterscotch, barley sugar, honeycomb, vanilla, and cinnamon, running into a satisfying finish of ginger and oak spice with a hint of coastal saltiness. —Jonny McCormick

The Bruichladdich Eighteen is a delightful example of higher-age cask management, pulling in elements that balance it very well. Have a bottle of this around to share with others.

90 Malt Advocate

More subtle and complex than the new 12 year old, and not as sweet. Creamy in texture and floral on the nose, with dried vanilla, gentle spice, nectarine, kiwi, plum, and lemon gum drops. Soft, elegant finish with a hint of mint. Great balance of a variety of flavors and lots of finesse. A well-crafted whisky!
