Matured in bourbon barrels, then finished in Indian cabernet sauvignon casks, the wine influence shows early on the nose with black cherry mousse, black currant, chocolate cigarillos, dried grasses, rolling tobacco, dried stone fruits, and peppercorns. It’s impressively moreish, mouth-filling, and rounded, with red fruits, melted chocolate, bramble, savory notes, peppercorn, and cassis. The dry finish brings dark fruit, spice, and chocolate. Utterly gorgeous.

Rich red fruit aromas define the nose - full of ripe plum, raspberry and redcurrant. Raisin, cinnamon and dark chocolate too. The palate reveals a fresh, herbal quality and toasty cereal flavours. Superb complexity of flavour and harmony throughout!

A blend of two straight whiskeys: a very young 2 year old high rye content whiskey and a 16 year old rye whiskey with a lower rye content. Perhaps the spiciest American whiskey I have ever tasted, yet at the same time, quite tame and mellow. Complex notes of mint, clove, cinnamon, licorice root, pine nuts, and dark chocolate, with a surprising dose of gin botanicals throughout. A soft underbelly of caramel, sweet corn, and soothing vanilla provides an interesting counterpoint. Very easy-drinking, too (hard to believe it’s 46%). Intriguing, and a must-try for rye whiskey aficionados — even if only to satisfy your curiosity.

Forest floor, dried leaves, and some light char on the nose, with hints of charcoal, drying oak tannins, and emerging notes of vanilla and banana. A sweet and lightly spiced palate, with a bit of minerality, peach, apricot, and honeyed fruits. Very full and flavorful on the finish, with a light sweetness of brown sugar, dark chocolate, and chile powder. It’s a bit light overall at 40%, but very well put together and delicious.

Clear color. Aromas and flavors of papaya salad, honeydew, cucumber with citrus dressing and cracked black pepper, and lilacs with a full body and a long finish that shows suggestions of lemongrass and thai basil, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots, lime and black pepper, and cucumber. Green papaya, cucumber, and tart melon salad with freshly ground black pepper; this is a salad course in your glass; happily drink the color Spring Green with a little pepper.

Key flavors originate from a recipe that includes spicy Blair Athol, fruity Glen Elgin, and creamy Cardhu. The nose revolves around apple pie filling, honey, sponge candy, malted milk, gentle spices, and Florentines, with a gentle coastal smokiness. Orange peel oils, dried apple, vanilla, fragrant spices, marzipan, and toasted almond flakes on the palate, with a finish of Chantilly cream, vanilla, and poached pear.

Sometimes all you want is a smooth sipper with enough character to bring you back, dram after dram. And for the price, this single malt is a perfect addition to most anyone’s liquor cabinet. Aberfeldy leans heavily into the Highland flavor palate with a less smokey nature and more fruit and spice. It does this in a balanced approach and with enough body to stand on its own in a field of tasty contenders.
