The palate offers a chalky-textured grip to its tannins, balanced acidity, and a refreshing, medium-bodied frame. It’s a nicely styled Pinot Noir that can be enjoyed now or over the next 4-5 years.

The Lylee tells the story of the estate site, and all 8 acres of Pinot Noir, with fruit coming from each of the five blocks. The oldest plantings are from 1997. The estate has a mix of clones, 115, 777 Pommard Wadensvil. Black tea, earth and juicy bramble fruits, and dessicated rose petals. Dark red berries and sweet earth on the palate, with ample structure. There is a grippiness to the wines, and a touch of rusticity to this wine, in the most elegant sense. 17% new oak for 10 months.

One of my favorite cuvées from this estate, the 2021 El Alma De Jonata checks in as 80% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Reminding me of a great vintage of Château Figeac, it has a gorgeous perfume of red and black fruits, spring flowers, lead pencil, and smoked tobacco. With medium to full body, gorgeously polished, integrated tannins, and an incredible finish, it already offers pleasure yet will ideally be hidden in the cellar for 4-5 years. It will have 20-25+ years of overall longevity.

The 2021 El Alma de Jonata is dense and powerful, but also very young. There is some youthful austerity that needs time to soften, and yet all the elements are so well balanced. Dark red/purplish fruit, blood orange, cedar, mint and spice all race throughout this sumptuous, super-expressive Cabernet Franc-based blend. Franc aromatics are especially prominent on the finish. Give this time.

"From the lowest yields since 2004, the 2015 El Desafio de Jonata smells like a barrel sample with its jammy blackberry, blueberry, cassis, crushed rock and lead pencil aromas and flavors. Rich, mouthfilling, plush and textured, yet with loads of underlying tannin, it's going to be another terrific vintage for this cuvée, yet it needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years. The blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% each of Merlot and Petit Verdot (there’s no Cabernet Franc) aged 20 months in 80% new barrels."

It's a fantastic and unique showing of Happy Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon China Blue Vineyard is polished and sensual from the get-go. Crushed flowers and bright red-toned fruit immediately confer freshness and a level of high-toned notes not especially typical of Happy Canyon Cabernets. This is an especially savory and pungent Cabernet. Soft tannins make it a delight to taste, even in its youth.
