The 2023 Pétalos has around 20% grapes from Corullón and the rest bought from around 100 families across Bierzo, approximately 91% Mencía, 8% whites and 1% other reds that fermented in open-top oak and stainless steel vats with indigenous yeast. Malolactic fermentation took a couple of months in oak and stainless steel, and the wine matured in barriques and bocoyes for 10 months. It comes in at 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.74. It has a serious nose that combines berry fruit with herbs and a licorice twist, and it is a little tighter and more herbal, denoting more sensation of freshness in the wine even if the year was also warmish. But the peaks of heat did not reach the highs they did in 2022. It makes you think of the Bierzo wines from yesteryear, with the rain during the harvest. It's elegant but there's weight. Despite the price level, this is a wine that aged beautifully in bottle, something you don't expect in an entry-level wine. Final production figures were as expected, 297,867 bottles. The wine was bottled between January and April 2025. This keeps its position as one of the best values in Spain.

The 2021 Las Cabañuelas is a blend from different plots in the Jorco Valley, all between 40 and 60 years of age and at altitudes between 700 and 830 meters above sea level on granite soils. The destemmed grapes fermented in concrete with a 32-day maceration and matured for 14 months in a 10,000-liter oak vat they bought from Alión. It's primary, fruit driven and ripe, with freshness and balance, and it has 14% alcohol, good acidity, fine-grained tannins and a clean, tasty finish. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2023.

Distinctive cool-climate aromas of charcuterie, dried kelp, peppercorn and clove. The aromas are thoroughly convincing, strongly reminiscent of, say, a good Crozes-Hermitage. Aged for a year in foudre then moved to demi-muids, the 2022 Côte Rôtie Les Journaries (known by the Maestria name in Europe) comes from the Landonne and Côte Rozier lieux-dits and was not destemmed. It has a similar perfume to the Amethyste with its red, blue, and black fruits as well as rose, potpourri, and peppery notes, yet it's more seamless, full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and has a great finish. The 2022 Cote Rotie Les Journaries (as it is known in the USA but called Mastria elsewhere) unveils a deep, complex bouquet of cassis, spices and dark wild berries intertwined with delicate notes of dark cherries and black olives. Full-bodied, broad and sappy on entry, it's textured and layered, with a seamless, pure core of fruit, powdery tannins and bright acids. It culminates in a long, ethereal and dark berry-inflected finish. Originating from vines situated in the western part of La Landonne (Côte Blonde and Côte Rozier), this exquisite wine masterfully combines a sappy, velvety texture with a racy density.

The 2019 Les Tourelles de Longueville is a blend of 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 68% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 18th of September to the 11th of October. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 30% new, for 12 months. The production of this wine represents 28% of the harvest. Very deep purple-black colored, it features captivatingly pure crushed black plums and fresh blackberry scents on the nose with suggestions of tilled soil, pencil lead, licorice and charcoal with a waft of bay leaves. The full-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating black fruits with a wonderfully plush texture and just enough freshness in the background, finishing long and earthy.

90-92 Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Les Tourelles de Longueville is a dark, somber wine. Black cherry, heavy torrefaction, graphite, licorice, cloves, leather and pipe tobacco wrap around the palate in a serious Pauillac. Somber and introverted, the 2019 is in no mood to show all its cards today. In a vintage in which to many wines are bright, Tourelles has a real sense of baritone-like intensity. The 2019 is more brute power than elegance.

The 2022 Gigondas Clovis Saurel checks in as all Grenache raised in demi-muids. It has subtle, classy oak in its sweet red fruits, ground pepper, garrigue, spice, and even meaty aromas and flavors. With medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, layered mouthfeel, and ultra-fine tannins, it’s impossible to resist. Give it some air if drinking any time soon, and it will clearly evolve gracefully over the coming 10-12 years or more.
