Foudres and 600 litre barrels. Mid lemon yellow, with notable ripeness on the nose, even some bacon fat – picked later after the heat spurt had done its work. However very far from heavy or heated on the nose, with clean cut Hautes Côtes character dominating the middle before the return of a honeyed citrus note to finish. Drink from 2026-2028. The Poderi Luigi Einaudi 2019 Barolo Bussia opens to a fragrant bouquet with wild rose and lilac. Those pretty high-toned aromas are followed by redcurrant and earthy licorice. Bussia is a very large MGA site, and there are dozens of little microclimates and nuances within this one vineyard. This wine embraces a very graceful and ethereal side of Bussia that tightens on the palate to show age-worthy structure. Production is 10,600 bottles.

The newest addition to Paolo Scavino’s already impressive Barolo lineup, the 2021 Bussia Vigna Fantini another drop-dead beauty from the estate. Hailing from a vineyard the family purchased in 2018 where the previous owner had planted different clones of Nebbiolo including the Rosé variety, it’s intense and fragrant, opening with heady scents of rose, iris, cake spice and menthol. Full-bodied but boasting a weightless concentration, the enveloping, delicious palate doles out raspberry compote, ripe Morello cherry, licorice and vanilla before a minty close. Velvety tannins provide seamless support while fresh acidity keeps it well balanced. Drink 2031–2041. Abv: 15%

A super-fresh and elegant Barolo with leafy lightness, red currants, watermelon, licorice and a touch of sweet violets on the nose. Slight sweetness on the palate, with a lot of minty flavors, a full body, fresh acidity and quite firm yet velvety tannins. Great overall harmony, with a savory aftertaste and a lavish finish.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is a blend of all 26 blocks on the property. Soft, pliant and inviting, the 2023 is a total delight. Best of all, it can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Soft contours wrap around a core of black cherry, plum and new leather. Drink it over the next decade.

Tasted just before bottling, so a sample of the final blend, the 2023 PSI is juicy, ripe and approachable. It is a little showier and headier, despite having similar alcohol to the bottled 2022 (perhaps a tad higher, but not quite reaching 14%), and it feels a little riper, with peachy notes and some decayed flowers. It has abundant tannins and feels like it's in need of some more time in bottle. This is usually the case for PSI: the tannins need time. They are resolved quite quickly, but it does need a bit of time. It should be bottled in May 2025.

92-94 Joaquín Hidalgo - Vinous Media

The 2023 PSI brings together fruit from 12 villages, mostly Gumiel de Mercado and Villatuelda in the Soria sector of Ribera del Duero. The project began in 2007 with the recovery of neglected vineyards, now totaling 200 hectares across about 700 parcels, 25% of which are estate-owned. Garnet colored, it opens with pine and herbal notes, then red fruit—cherry and a touch of plum. The palate shows fine-grained tannins, a midweight texture and detailed fruit. The bottle will reveal the Soria character in the interplay of fine tannins and acidity.

The 2022 Gigondas Clovis Saurel checks in as all Grenache raised in demi-muids. It has subtle, classy oak in its sweet red fruits, ground pepper, garrigue, spice, and even meaty aromas and flavors. With medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, layered mouthfeel, and ultra-fine tannins, it’s impossible to resist. Give it some air if drinking any time soon, and it will clearly evolve gracefully over the coming 10-12 years or more.

Entirely crafted from old Grenache Noir vines, the 2022 Gigondas Clovis Saurel was macerated for seven weeks and matured for 15 months in large barrels. Evoking a deep, earthy bouquet of cedar, tobacco, oak, smoke and spices mingled with carnal notes, it's full-bodied, rich and concentrated with a fleshy core of fruit and structured tannins that bring some structure and power, concluding with a long, tobacco-inflected finish. This ripe, somewhat overripe Gigondas will offer a broad drinking window.
