Very firm and deep, extremely complex, fresh and precise, somewhat leathery and tobacco-like, also iodine on the nose, ripe, partly dried red and black berries with dried floral aromas, pepper, allspice and some Cheyenne pepper, dried mushrooms and a little undergrowth. Tight, concentrated, tart, yet extremely juicy fruit, present, ripe tannins and a certain acid bite, dense and persistent on the palate, tarry notes, a little tobacco, allspice and pepper, deep and complex, restrained power. Great.

"Chardonnay dominates pinot noir here 60-40, the pinkish salmon colour is arrived at with a dash of red pinot noir from Les Orizeaux, it smells of sour cherries, almost flinty stony minerals and a gently spiced biscuity edge. The palate has a smooth and creamy texture, oozes charm and plays off generosity with restraint to great effect. Really fresh, really fine, drink now."

The white 2023 Rocim & Barbeito A Meias is a collaboration between Barbeito and Heredade do Rocim from Alentejo where they are famous for their use of amphorae. So, they produced a varietal Verdelho that fermented and matured in clay amphorae that they sent from Alentejo to Madeira. It has a moderate 11% alcohol and is mineral, wide and faintly salty, serious, clean and nuanced, characterful, vibrant and fresh, long and tasty. This is quite impressive. Only 322 numbered bottles produced.

Ten years ago, this would have been the quality of the Grand Vins... (2025-2040).
