From down near Hopewell on an east-facing slope, the 2021 Pinot Noir Elton Vineyard takes on a touch more pigment in its deep, transparent ruby hue and would benefit from decanting if drinking early, as it has a touch of reduction on opening. It opens to reveal a floral perfume of violets, black raspberry coulis, black pepper spice, and a hint of blue fruit shining through. Rounded and medium to full-bodied, though elegant and graceful, pure fruit fills the palate, and its floral perfume lasts through the finish. Also offering ripe tannins and a long finish with a hint of warming spice on the back, it’s another age-worthy wine to enjoy over the next 10-12 years. This site is currently being converted to organic viticulture.

Silky textures are contrasted by tart wild berry depths and saline-tinged acidity, saturating and enlivening the palate. Grippy and long, yet still mouth-watering, the 2021 Elton finishes potent and structured. It leaves a coating of fine-grained tannins, adding a classically dry sensation. "The 2022 Blanc d'Orto Brisat differs from the regular Blanc d'Orto in the skin contact, which here is 21 days in stainless steel, and the wine matured in used 500-liter barrels for six months. Furthermore, this was selected from a specific plot planted in 1948, and the wine has more balanced parameters, 13.55% alcohol, a pH of 3.42 and 4.8 grams of acidity. In my book, if you do skin contact, this is the way to do it, not overpowering the wine, adding nuance, weight and complexity but keeping the DNA of the grape and the place. Well done, guys! 1,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in the spring of 2024."

There is a savory, almost salty side of the 2021 Superior Tinto that makes it very tasty and adequate for food. It was produced with 40% each Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz and 5% Sousão from a less warm vintage. The wine is more serious and fresher, with a moderate 14% alcohol and a polished mouthfeel. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

A Bordeaux-inspired blend, the 2019 Yettalil Red Wine is considerably darker, deeper and richer than the Napa Valley Cabernet. Scents of cassis, pencil shavings, loam and mocha all appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is expansive and velvety without getting jammy or overly broad. Perhaps most important, for a wine that will presumably be consumed along savory dishes, it's nicely savory itself, with earthy notes and gentle tannins punctuating the long finish.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard is one of the most potent vintages of this wine I can remember tasting. Dense and textured, the 2021 shows ample dark fruit and complex earthy/savory undertones that add balance. The 2021 benefits from the addition of some excess fruit that would have been used in the main label but that, for practical purposes, ended up in the tanks for the Tanbark Hill. Readers will find a wine of breadth, power and character. In this vintage, the Tanbark Hill gives a very good idea of the quality and style of the Grand Vin.
