Dark minerals and a hint of cocoa powder and cigar box. Full-bodied and juicy on the palate with lots of broad-shouldered, fine-grained tannins. Intense, concentrated and incredibly persistent. Dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, delicate ochre rim. Delicate precious wood savouriness, a hint of caramel, ripe cherries, blackberry confit, very inviting, delicately decorated with raspberry and liquorice. Juicy, red forest berries, fresh, lively acidity, mineral and full of finesse, pleasant extracted sweetness on the finish, delicate lavender, long-lasting, secure development and certain ageing potential.

The flagship 2021 Trilogy from this estate checks in as 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec, all raised in mostly (all?) new oak. This medium to full-bodied, ripe, concentrated, satisfying effort has lots of blueberry and darker raspberry-like fruit, some chocolaty oak and dusty minerality, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I love its overall balance, it has notable purity, and I see no reason it shouldn't evolve for 15-20 years.

Readers will find a deep, layered Etichetta Bianca, a wine that marries power with finesse like few wines can. I especially admire the wine's breadth and overall presence. Hints of sage, tobacco and incense linger on the sustained finish.

The white 2023 Rocim & Barbeito A Meias is a collaboration between Barbeito and Heredade do Rocim from Alentejo where they are famous for their use of amphorae. So, they produced a varietal Verdelho that fermented and matured in clay amphorae that they sent from Alentejo to Madeira. It has a moderate 11% alcohol and is mineral, wide and faintly salty, serious, clean and nuanced, characterful, vibrant and fresh, long and tasty. This is quite impressive. Only 322 numbered bottles produced.

This is a bit tight, possibly because of the recent bottling. 5,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2022."

The 2024 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese offers a salty wet slate aroma with a savor reminiscent of lichen and citrus peel. All about it is precise, stony, linear, crystalline and bright. You almost forget that this is a Spätlese, as its sweetness and acidity seem to be bound absolutely to the sunken salty slate that makes the mouth water endlessly. I tasted this wine several times over the course of a few months, and it has already shown a happy evolution coming into slow focus like the faint colors that emerge from a Polaroid photograph. Indeed, the bouquet appeared more closed just a short while ago. The wine's strongest suit is its elegantly streamlined mouthfeel and its contained 13.5% alcohol content. These qualities add to the silky cleanness of the mouthfeel and the accessible freshness of this vintage. I am confident that this bottle will improve with time. It requires patience."

As I am finding with the top producers in this vintage, the tannins demand time but also have a sweetness to them that makes the wines highly pleasurable to taste now, and they should improve and age very well. From the original plot in Cannubi Boschis that Luciano Sandrone bought in 1977, along with more recent acquisitions in Cannubi proper. A rechristening in 2013 to Aleste represents a contraction of his two grandchildren names: Alessia and Stefano.
