The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Broken Shale is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it strolls out of the glass with nonchalant notes of warm cassis, stewed plums and dried mulberries with hints of fragrant earth and licorice. Full-bodied, the palate delivers a soft texture and great freshness lifting the concentrated flavor to bright, savory finish.

Both red and black fruits, tobacco, chocolate, and some earthy, herbal nuances all show in the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Broken Shale, which comes from the Pritchard Ridge Vineyard on Atlas Peak. Medium to full-bodied, round, and elegant on the palate, it certainly delivers the goods at the price and is unquestionably an outstanding wine.

Gruet is one the great “surprise” wines. Who would have thought that a superb sparkling wine could be produced in New Mexico? For any skeptics, the Gruet Blanc de Noirs should be a revelation. Lightly spiced red fruit on the nose and palate showcase the pinot noir used to make up the cuvée, and the wine’s focus can be traced to the chardonnay component. A great value and dependable producer make this a real must-buy.

The 2022 Barbaresco is a pretty rich, heady wine. Dark cherry/plum fruit, cloves, licorice and mocha build as the 2022 shows off its considerable depth. This is one of the few 2022s that is quite resonant texturally. The aromatics could be more lifted and the tannins could use a bit more polish, but those qualities were next to impossible to come by in 2022. The inclusion of some juice from Riserva lots is a great help. All things considered, this is a stellar showing.

Another blended wine like the Chardonnay Granitiers, the 2024 Pinot Noir Montanita De Oro is a celebration of the best mountain sites in Monterey, the 51% majority from Pelio, some Michaud, and the rest from Double LL, each at mid-elevation in different AVAs, including the soon-to-be designated Carmel Coast. Harvested, native-fermented (60% whole cluster), and aged separately, Smith blends them together in the spring to age under a year in new, second-fill, and neutral French oak. The texture is creamy smooth, with a medium-bodied wealth of crisp red fruit and dried herb. Drink now through 2034.

2023 DEEVO Red Blend is the acronym of the 5 people that together made the blend. This is tradition at Long Cellars and is done every year. The acronym is different every year but it is designed to be one of the best wines each vintage. The team (friends, colleagues, wine club members) work hard to find the best possible blend using 6 Bordeaux varietals. The masculine dark red has considerable depth of flavor and rich but structured texture. With the backbone consisting of 50% Petit Verdot, it's no wonder it finishes with firm tannins for a long finish. But the almost equal parts Cabernet and Malbec and a hint of Carmenere soften and balance the wine, giving it delicious layers of flavor and a robust mouth feel. This blend has both muscle and beauty, and will especially appeal to those who appreciate darker style Old World wines such as a well-made young Bordeaux. Blended with 5% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Heart Of The Hill Vineyard is a pretty, floral, elegant Red Mountain Cabernet that has a perfume of blue fruits, medium-bodied richness, a fresh, focused, yet nicely structured mouthfeel, and classy background notes of violets and spicy oak. It brings good ripeness while staying balanced and light on its feet. It's a good value and, I suspect, will keep for a decade.
