There is a savory, almost salty side of the 2021 Superior Tinto that makes it very tasty and adequate for food. It was produced with 40% each Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz and 5% Sousão from a less warm vintage. The wine is more serious and fresher, with a moderate 14% alcohol and a polished mouthfeel. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

Limber, sculpting tannins and balsamico-laced acidity are a supple frame, and accents of stone, wild sage, sassafras root and pepper linger on the fragrant finish. A Bordeaux-inspired blend, the 2019 Yettalil Red Wine is considerably darker, deeper and richer than the Napa Valley Cabernet. Scents of cassis, pencil shavings, loam and mocha all appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is expansive and velvety without getting jammy or overly broad. Perhaps most important, for a wine that will presumably be consumed along savory dishes, it's nicely savory itself, with earthy notes and gentle tannins punctuating the long finish.

The medium to full-bodied 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard delivers complex notes of mountain fruit, with hints of sage and bay leaf accenting cassis, blueberries and raspberries. In the mouth, it's firmly buttressed by grainy tannins, with terrific acids that linger on the finish in mouthwatering fashion. This, Togni's "early-drinking" wine, should age two decades with ease.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard is one of the most potent vintages of this wine I can remember tasting. Dense and textured, the 2021 shows ample dark fruit and complex earthy/savory undertones that add balance. The 2021 benefits from the addition of some excess fruit that would have been used in the main label but that, for practical purposes, ended up in the tanks for the Tanbark Hill. Readers will find a wine of breadth, power and character. In this vintage, the Tanbark Hill gives a very good idea of the quality and style of the Grand Vin.

Classic Bordeaux nose with lots of cassis, lead pencil, ink and some earthiness. Plump and juicy on the palate with a medium to full body and silky tannins. Delicious, refined and really drinkable. Excellent length, too. An outstanding Haut-Medoc. Drink or hold.

The color of blackberry pie filling, this wine offers a bouquet of black cherry, cassis and clove. Opulent tannins provide a framework for cherry, blackberry, nutmeg, dark chocolate and coffee bean flavors with a hint of olive tapenade. The lengthy finish is marked with a note of caramel. An antidote to fresh, easy-drinking Monastrell, this is one to lay down and savor in a few years. Drink through 2031.

The impressive 2017 Elo is varietal, rich and powerful but polished and with a rustic elegance. It's a bit older, so it has some developed and tertiary aromas, and the tannins are mostly resolved. It has a chalky texture and a long finish.

The 2019 Claret North Coast Red Wine is a killer value, with great lift and freshness throughout. Made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and the rest Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, the majority of the fruit was sourced from Jericho Canyon. Pouring a youthful purple/red, it is lifted with aromas of graphite, fresh black cherry, cedar, and pine needles. Full-bodied but lifted, it offers ripe tannins, fresh acidity, and notes of fresh red and black fruit, pressed flowers, and turned soil earthiness on the finish. It's drinking well now but is certainly worth cellaring over the next 10 or more years. It’s a great value.

The mid-palate displays a level of creamy richness that takes substantial cellaring to unlock in the rest of the lineup. The signature tension and angularity of the Rhys style are present, albeit with a welcomed softness and generosity of texture. Readers holding this admirable array of wines should start here and hold off on the single-site wines for at least a few more years.
