A bright deep purple. Some deep purple fruit too, this is one of the richest wines, hitting 14.5%, which slightly impacts the balance on the palate. Good wine in this richer style, but less finesse at least at this stage. Drink from 2031-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

Miner's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc that spent 21 months in 60% new French oak without being overly impacted by the wood. Scents of crushed stone, pencil shavings, cherries and sage mark the nose of this full-bodied effort, which comes across as tannic and even a bit rugged. It's a wine that appears to need time, yet it doesn't seem that rich or concentrated. Time will tell, but in the meantime, serve it alongside a rare hunk of red meat to help tame the tannins.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino VV bursts from the glass with a mentholated freshness, as dusty dried flowers and red currants are offset by a mineral thrust of crushed ashen stone. This is soft and enveloping, yet nearly juicy in feel, with depths of dark wild berry fruit and exotic spices that slowly saturate. A twang of savory herbs and sour citrus defines the finale, balancing the grippy tannins that are left to linger, as the 2018 finishes classically dry under an air of rosy inner florals. This is, yet again, another excellent example of the energetic nature of the vintage, yet the VV also possesses the potential for medium-term cellaring.

95-98 Vinous Media - Vinous

The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Steinertal Smaragd, situated between two lateral valleys that channel cool air, gives this terraced site of gneiss higher day-to-night amplitude and lower daytime temperatures. Gentle spice brings white pepper and crushed fern on the nose. The palate arrives with perfect tension, peppery fern, fine citrus freshness and beautiful concentration. Citrus is key this year on this wonderfully long and incisive Grüner.

This fortified red blend was aged in wood for 20 years. That has taken away fruitiness and, as with an aged Tawny Port, has given the wine flavors of dried prune, spice and old wood aromas. The wine is for sipping and savoring, ready to drink now. — Roger Voss

"The NV 40 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled with a bar top cork in 2014. It comes in with 125 grams per liter of residual sugar. Big, weighty and mouth filling, this is an aromatic Tawny that finishes with acidity and tension. Gripping on the finish, its flavors become more interesting as long as it sits in the glass (or on your palate). It is not, perhaps, as sunny as the Fonseca, its sibling reviewed this issue, but it is denser and more gripping. Comparing to the Taylor 30 (also reviewed), I'm not sure I liked the 40 here all that much better. The 30 is a bit fleshier while this 40 is a bit more concentrated in flavor and aromatics. Perhaps some additional age also helped this 40 combat some of the aggression on the 30. They are both pretty fine, a difference of five to Midnight and five after, rather than night and day. It is still a fine experience and my favorite of the group. Don't drink it too warm. Room temperature is mostly too warm. The sweet spot for most tends to be 58-62 degrees Fahrenheit."

This is a phenomenal wine that highlights the hard work and expertise of Chiara Boschis and her brother Giorgio. The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2021 Barolo Cannubi is made with organic Nebbiolo clones of Michet and Lampia planted in a tiny 0.7-hectare plot at 300 meters above sea level on the powdery white limestone soils from the Miocene epoch that characterize this celebrated cru. The wine is refined and delicate with rose hip, violet and pure cherry essence. The aromas are stacked with soaring vertical intensity, and they give this wine an especially bright and lifted bouquet. The mouthfeel outperforms most of its peers thanks to its tight and silky essence and the clean powdery feel of its tannins. The Cannubi is showing very nicely now, but the Mosconi could benefit from more time in bottle. This is a limited release of 4,000 bottles.

Aromas of red fruit, dried herbs, cola, earth and a touch of licorice. Medium- to full-bodied with chewy but not overbearing tannins, neat fruit flavors and a subtly chewy finish. A very absorbing wine. Already approachable, but it will improve with a year of cellaring. Best from 2026.

The 2021 Barolo Cannubi is pure sensuality. Creamy, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, spice, blood orange and lavender. Everything here speaks to balance. Pretty floral top notes lift the eternal, saline finish. The 2021 is impeccably done. It’s a very pretty and complete Barolo from Chiara Boschis.

Menthol, eucalyptus, sweet spice and salty, mineral flavors swirl around the core of macerated cherry and plum in this lively, sophisticated and finely textured version. Tips toward the tannins in the mix today, with a savory aftertaste, yet this red is all about finesse. Beautifully balanced and long. Best from 2029 through 2047. 275 cases made, 100 cases imported.

The 2021 Barolo Cannubi is a jeweled ruby color and is fragrant, floral, and complex with aromas of fresh flowers, black raspberries, cherries, fresh spice, and sweet orange citrus. Medium-bodied, the palate is highly elegant and graceful, with refined, even tannins, ripe acidity, and a long finish with a great feel throughout. This continues to be one of the top expressions coming out of Cannubi and offers both immediate pleasure and a wide window for enjoyment over the coming decades.

Made from 80% Meunier and the rest Pinot Noir, the NV Champagne Blanc De Noirs Eugene is a perpetual reserve blend spanning from 2002 to 2021. It pours a rich golden straw color and offers a commanding presence in its notes of graham cracker spice, orange peel, ginger, and wild cherry. Pillowy and rounded, the palate is supple and juicy with red fruit and a saline lift off the finish. This beautiful wine is singing now, and it should hold up nicely over the coming 8-10 years.

Pale colour, the fruit has a waxy lemon note to it medium bodied, though with good intensity towards the back of the palate, indeed this does have impressive persistence. The fruit is generous enough, apple and persimmon, to cover the bones, with a light citrus wash to finish. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.

Rich and plush, but nicely structured, with black cherry and toasty vanilla aromas and soft red currant, cedar and spice notes. A touch of herb comes in with the ripe tannins on the finish.

The 2023 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is very intense and open on the complex and saline nose that is reminiscent of crushed slate rocks as well as ripe and intense, dense citrus fruit intermingled with lemon aromas. Round and refined on the palate, this is a lively and savory Riesling with a firm, mineral structure and floral flavors on the complex and youthful finish. This is a Spätlese to be aged for at least 5+ years. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 07 24 in January 2025.
