The 2023 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a medium ruby color and is fresh on the nose with notes of lifted spice, compact red berries, Bing cherries, roses, and sweet herbs. The palate is medium-bodied, with a polished and fine texture, a silky feel, and clean elegance through the finish. It’s a lovely and charming Pinot Noir with a lot of finesse to drink over the coming 8-10 years.

"A smoky style that’s a touch herbal and meaty. Towards full-bodied, with good weight and texture. Quite a saline expression, ending on crisp raspberry acidity and quite strict tannins. Will always be a lean style, but should make interesting old bones."

"This generous and well-structured 2021 Chateauneuf has excellent raspberry and strawberry aromas for the challenging vintage, plus notes of floral aromas. Surprisingly fine tannins, too. Still very youthful and in need of a bit of time in bottle to reach ideal harmony, but the freshness at the finish is already delightful. A cuvee 75% grenache, 10% syrah, 10% mourvedre and 5% cinsault that were co-fermented, then matured in foudre. Drinkable now, but best from 2024."

"The 2018 Barolo Riserva Cascina Dardi is a fine choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Spice, worn-in leather, cedar and pipe tobacco are all suggestive of a Barolo that is headed into its first plateau of maturity. The Riserva is a strong wine for the year, but the medium-bodied structure of the vintage is impossible to ignore. There's plenty to like, but I would not push my luck on aging. A burst of floral and spice notes wrapped in silky tannins rounds things out in this stylish Barolo from the Fantino brothers."

Tasted at the Palmères de Castillon event, where I was a jury member, and this was one of the wines picked out blind. I checked it against a different bottle at home later, and suggest that it is given at least half an hour in a carafe, as it remains fairly closed, but once again this is proof of the quality of 2022, and it's a seriously impressive wine that offers wonderful value. I'm always a fan of Clos Puy Arnaud, and you get the deft precision of the winemaking here, coupled with ripe blueberry and raspberry fruits, liquorice, black tea, pomegranate and slate-scrape tannins.

The 2022 Clos Puy Arnaud is a dense, extroverted wine. Inky dark fruit, licorice, menthol and cloves are all amplified. Usually Clos Puy Arnaud is more refined, but in 2022, the vintage dominates and speaks loudly. Even so, this is a compelling offering. I look forward to tasting it with bottle age.

Vibrant red, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino takes on aromas of grenadine, apricot, tangerine, and pressed flowers. This medium-bodied Rosso remains pure and focused, with lovely balance in its fruit. It has fine tannins and is graceful, with a refined texture on the palate. Harmonious in its feel, it is fantastically balanced and is going to have a wide drinking window over the coming 10 years. Approximately 10,000 bottles were produced."

The 2024 Chardonnay (Sonoma Coast) is a terrific introduction to the range. Apricot, white flowers, mint, white pepper and tangerine oil are nicely pushed forward. The warmer season yielded an especially forward, open-knit Chardonnay. It's a style that works quite well at this level.

The nose is full, packed with alluring aromas of blackberries, cassis and plums entwined with cloves, cardamom and violet, subtle leathery note developing, along with dark cocoa, black olives and whisky barrel, very complex. Full-bodied, a bright palate full of energy and multilayered, black fruit melded with black olives, cocoa and violet, unfolding a hint of leather and barrel spices of cloves, cardamom and star anise. Herbal element unveiled as the wine aerated, echoing spices, black olives, linger to a very long, fulsome finish. The wine has concentration and density, yet it's bright with clarity and layers, full of whimsical interest. The tannin is well structured and integrated, fine-grained with a velvety grip, provide great vitality supported by balanced acidity. This is a stunning blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 20% and Cabernet Franc 15%, with concentrated flavour of perfectly ripe fruit and balanced acidity, elegantly complex barrel details on a fine-structured palate. Match with t-bone steak & truffle sauce and roasted lamb over the next 15+ years. Fruit sourced from best parcels in Paritua Vineyard at 2112 Maraekakaho Road, Bridge Pa Triangle. Destemmed, cold-soaked, fermented to 14.5% alc, 20-28 days post ferment maceration. Aged in French oak barriques for 24 months, 50% new oak.

A Bordeaux-inspired blend, the 2019 Yettalil Red Wine is considerably darker, deeper and richer than the Napa Valley Cabernet. Scents of cassis, pencil shavings, loam and mocha all appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is expansive and velvety without getting jammy or overly broad. Perhaps most important, for a wine that will presumably be consumed along savory dishes, it's nicely savory itself, with earthy notes and gentle tannins punctuating the long finish.
