This team can do no wrong, and the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill is yet another magical wine. Based on 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it reveals a dense purple/ruby hue as well as majestic aromatics of ripe currants, scorched earth, mulberries, spring flowers, and graphite. With full-bodied richness, a layered, elegant mouthfeel, remarkable concentration, and absolutely flawless tannins, this regal First Growth-like effort deserves 7-8 years of bottle age and will have 30-40 years of overall longevity.

Supremely rich and concentrated, Colgin's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill Vineyard nevertheless remains vibrant and energetic. Hints of bay leaf perk up scents of dark chocolate and black cherries on the nose, while the full-bodied, plushly textured palate glides easily into a prolonged finish redolent of loamy earth and red raspberries. Like so many of the world's greatest wines, it's a series of seeming paradoxes—in this case, ripeness and freshness, fruit and earth, density and vibrancy—that complement each other and emerge as an elegant, harmonious whole.

The 2021 Tychson Hill has a deep garnet-purple color. Notes of kirsch, black currant jelly, and rose oil prance out of the glass, followed by hints of crushed rocks, lavender oil, and anise with a waft of cinnamon stick. The full-bodied palate is super-intense with a rock-solid backbone of grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing very long and spicy. A real head-turner!

Rich and explosive in feel, the 2021 Cheval Blanc is outrageously beautiful. For the first time since 2011, the Grand Vin is more than 50% Cabernet Franc. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and mocha are all amplified in this potent, luxurious Cheval Blanc. Polished, seamless tannins wrap it all together. This is one of my favorites of the vintage.

The aromas of currants and flowers with hints of stones and sandalwood are enticing. Medium- to full-bodied, with an impressive structure of polished yet intense and focused tannins that run the length of the wine. Both the acidity and tannins play off each other, giving a punchy character. A classic Cheval. Only 13.3% alcohol. 52% cabernet franc, 43% merlot and 5% cabernet sauvignon. For a decade or so, this wine never had so much cabernet franc. Needs four or five years to soften. Drink after 2029.

This sublime gem pops from the glass effortlessly with array of flowers, spices, red, and dark red fruits, tobacco, and mint leaves. The palate offers a majestic display of vibrant, al dente red fruits, and ripe, dark red berries, coupled with firm, cashmere, polished tannins, velvet-textured black cherries, and plums. This is showing even better in the bottle than it did in barrel! The wine blends 52% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, making this the highest percentage of Cabernet in over a decade. The willingness to delay harvesting, finishing October 14, along with low yields, at only 28 hectoliters per hectare are part of the reason the vintage was so successful. Drink from 2029-2060

The 2021 Cheval Blanc has turned out beautifully in bottle, and director Pierre-Olivier Clouet even considers it to be superior to the 2020, a preference that I share. Wafting from the glass with aromas of mulberries and cherries mingled with incense, iris and rose petals, framed by a deft touch of new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a velvety attack that segues into a rich, concentrated mid-palate framed by sweet, powdery tannins and concluding with a long, penetrating, rose-inflected finish.

Incredible aromatic complexity on the nose, just wow, the beautiful bitter dark chocolate, blackcurrant, blackberries, fragrant violets and roses, coffee, toffee, caramel, smoked earth, liquorice and tobacco, I could smell it for hours! It wows on the palate too giving succulence, freshness and juiciness balanced by integrated acidity and a backbone of spice coming from the Cabernet Franc - the highest percentage since 2011 and the first time outweighing Merlot at 52%. Perfume continues on the palate also, the soft fragrance giving the nuance while the satin tannins coat the mouth with bite and chew. Minerality comes across via wet stone and graphite edges with liquorice and clove spice. Constituent tastings of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc show how skillfully this was created. Still quite tense and linear at this point but showcases perfectly both the vineyard and vintage - each detail and decision in the glass with no let up of power or concentration. A fantastic effort from the team and winemaker Pierre-Olivier Clouet.

"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières 1er Cru has an elegant and restrained bouquet featuring light floral notes mixed with redcurrant and cranberry scents. The aromas have good delineation. The palate is smooth in texture with light tannins but not great depth. It has a touch of white pepper and clove toward the slightly attenuated finish. Fine, but it's early-drinking."

A red blend made from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Syrah, aged for 18 months in oak casks and barrels. It displays ripe red and black fruits enveloped by floral, menthol, and sweet spice notes, which are confirmed on the palate. It stands out for its overall balance, with fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity dictating the rules. Refined, it has a full and persistent finish with earthy and plum touches. Alcohol 14.5%.

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little broody to start off, soon unfurling to offer notes of creme de cassis, baked plums, and boysenberry preserves, followed by hints of crushed rocks, tree bark, and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate is rich, concentrated, and intense, with grainy tannins and a long, lively, mineral-sparked finish. This is still so youthful - moving at a glacial pace - so, give it a good 7-9 years more in cellar and drink it over the following 40-years+.

Mouton Rothschild hasn't skipped a beat since the sublime 2009 vintage! 2019 continues their winning streak with one of the wines of the vintage. Almost opaque in color, the nose resonates with its showy display of Asian spices, cigar wrapper, fresh herbs, cigar box, blackberries, crushed stone and cassis. Full-bodied, richly concentrated, opulent, and equally refined, the multi-layered display of flawlessly ripe berries, elegant textures, balance, freshness and flamboyance is what the great vintages of Mouton are all about. The finish crosses the 60 second mark with ease. Drink from 2035-2070.

The nose is elegant, fruity, complex and offers elegance, intensity and finesse, a fine grain and a nice aromatic intensity. There are notes of graphite, Bigarreau cherry and, more slightly, camphor, combined with delicate touches of crunchy black fruit, fine raspberry, discrete hints of lily, lilac and a subtle hint of clove, nutmeg and a subtle touch of sweet spices. The palate is fresh, mineral, balanced, elegant and offers delicacy, precision, juiciness, a nice acidity of the fruit, roundness, a nice definition, fleshiness, acidity, tension and a certain straightness in elegance. On the palate this wine expresses crunchy blackcurrant, crunchy blueberry and slightly raspberry notes combined with hints of fleshy/pulpy currants as well as hints of violet, lily, nutmeg, racy/gravely almost saline minerality, crunchy blueberry and a fine touch of vanilla. Good length. Nice fleshiness and aromatic purity. Superb persistence (+17 caudalies). Some chewiness on the finish. Harmony!

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild has come together beautifully since I tasted it from barrel. Today, it is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. Powerful and statuesque in its beauty, Mouton is remarkable in every way. Layers of dark-toned fruit confer seriousness and intensity that builds with time. All of the finesse I saw in barrel is still present. Since then, the 2019 has gained flesh and vibrancy. Magnificent!

This is incredibly complex, with all the cabernet descriptors, from mint and lead pencil to blackberry, blackcurrant and menthol. It changes all the time in the glass, just as in the nose. Yet, it remains cool and classy. Full-bodied with very fine, tight tannins that run the length of the wine, carrying on and on and on. Well-framed and compact wine. Never-ending procession of currant, berry and black cherry fruit, together with licorice, earth and just a hint of black truffle. 90% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Give this until 2028 to show its true greatness.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, DELICATE ochre rim. Attractive savouriness nuances, dark forest berryish confit, hints of cassis and black cherries, fine nougat, a hint of purples. Juicy, extractsweet, ripe cherries, silky body, supporting ripe tannins, pleasant freshness, mineral in the finish, excellent length, already harmonious, very precise style with certain ageing potential for decades of development.

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is the most dramatic of the Médoc first growths, soaring from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and violets mingled with rich aromas of cedar, cigar wrapper, licorice, loamy soil and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and powerful, with huge levels of concentration and an ineffably complete, seamless profile, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Plenty of ripe tannin is hidden by its ample core of fruit, and despite its youthful polish, this will require plenty of bottle age to realize all its potential. This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot tastes in many respects like the 2016 Mouton's more sun-kissed cousin.

"This single-vineyard blend of Sangiovese and Merlot from the Bertinga vineyard, owned by Castello di Ama until 2015, is a superb wine. The Sangiovese is vinified in concrete then aged in large Stockinger casks, while the Merlot is vinified in stainless steel and aged in 500l tonneaux. It rests in bottle for four years before release. The result shines for its bright and juicy outlook, the alberese soil having its presence felt in the lovely sapidity and mineral tang which accompanies hedgerow fruits and herbal notes on the textured palate. The finish is full of bold, ripe red, black and blue berries yet carries elegance and freshness."

Their single-vineyard 2022 Clos Mogador, they flagship wine, was produced with a blend of grapes, mostly Garnacha and Cariñena but also some Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon (less and less, as they are regrafting most of them). It fermented with 40% full clusters and matured in 2,000- and 2,500-liter oak foudres; some are old barriques, to avoid having too much new oak, and some lots finish aging in concrete to complete some 20 months. They have implemented some changes, moving toward larger volumes, abandoning the barriques and moving to foudre (with the low volumes in 2024, the wine will be only in foudre). It has a very Mediterranean nose with plenty of dry hay and straw notes, the classical wet slate notes, very Priorat too, and it has a round palate and very fine, chalky tannins. It's serious and harmonious and feels relaxed, without any excess. It comes in at 14% alcohol with 5.4 grams of acidity and a bone-dry finish. None of the 2022s showed excess heat or ripeness. The alcohol is contained and integrated, and the wines are balanced and harmonious but with a more Mediterranean profile. 35,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.

"The 2021 Laurel, the second wine from Clos Erasmus was produced with grapes from younger vines, between five and 40 years old, and is a blend of 80% Garnacha, 11% Syrah and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were cooled down for 24 hours before sorting and destemming and then put in the vat where they warmed up and started fermenting naturally. They did a soft vinification with short pumping overs to avoid extraction, and the fermentation lasted two to three weeks followed by four weeks of maceration. The wine matured in oak vat, barrel and amphorae for 18 months. It's super aromatic, floral and expressive, clean and elegant, delicate and ethereal. It has a velvety palate that is nicely textured, seamless, elegant and balanced and with a focused, clean, long finish. I see the meaty side of Syrah here. It has 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.3. The oak is completely integrated despite the fact that the wine is very young. 28,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023."
