It’s an ideal expression of the Russian River Valley, with all the bright, sunny orchard fruit and spritzy citrus lift you could hope for, but also an extra measure of freshness and juiciness that leaves the mouth watering. Notably restrained, the 2024 shows excellent finesse, especially for an appellation-level bottling.

Aldo Sohm's and Gerhard Kracher's 2024 Grüner Veltliner Lion is from the Pulkautal in the Weinviertel region north of Vienna, almost at the border to the Czech Republic. The wine offers an elegant and rather coolish, spicy nose with savory seed fruit and earthy or even stony aromas and has a certain, very attractive reduction. Elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, linear, savory and grippy Veltliner with a long and saline finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted at Weinlaubenhof Kracher in Illmitz, Burgenland, in June 2025.

This finely detailed Champagne teases the palate with pinprick-sized bubbles and lightly mouthwatering acidity, a harmonious frame for flavors of patisserie pear and cherry fruit, pickled ginger, almond biscotti and spun honey. This is subtle at first but expands beautifully on the palate, and the long, minerally finish echoes smoke and oyster shell notes. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Disgorged February 2024. Drink now through 2040.

This has power and poise, with garrigue, plum, licorice and raspberry expertly framed by a lot of mineral energy and graphite shavings. Refined and pure, with integration from start to finish. Some finely cut tannins maintain the focus and form. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035. 2,350 cases made, 500 cases imported.

The 2022 Viñedos en San Vicente de la Sonsierra was produced in the same way as the 2021 that I tasted next to it, trying to express finesse and purity in a warmer and ripe year. The wine has similar parameters, 13.9% alcohol. It's surprisingly fresh and harmonious for a 2022, close to the 2021 from the same village, with some floral hints and a seamless palate, juicy and with round tannins. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.

Minty herbs come together with split pine, graphite and gravel dust before settling on peppery wildberries as the radiant 2017 Alzero smolders up from the glass. It is elegant, seamless and silken, with masses of ripe raspberry and cherry tones underscored by autumnal spice and hints of dark chocolate, all guided by a wave of vibrant acidity. It finishes with dramatic length and heroic structure, leaving a staining of primary concentration and a pleasantly bitter tinge of clove that lingers impossibly long. This is an Alzero for the ages.

Firmly structured and loaded with finesse and energy, the chiseled Pajè Vecchie Viti 2019 is another stunner from Luca and Alfredo Roagna. It has great intensity and layers of aromas and flavors including woodland strawberry, red cherry, anise and cool mint set against tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it vibrant but also balanced even at this primary stage. This is still in its infancy and needs time. Drink 2032–2059.

Asili's ace card is elegance. Montefico has especially fragrant aromas, and Pajè is distinguished by its structure. That textural richness comes from the advanced age and deep roots of 80-year-old vines. The Roagna 2019 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti was born in an amphitheater of vines on limestone soils. The top part of the vineyard where the mineral signature is more pronounced goes to the Barbaresco Crichët Pajé, and the remaining fruit is used here. The wine shows a combination of sweetness and power with chalky tannins to close. Of the four Vecchie Viti wines (including three Barbarescos and one Barolo), this is the last wine served in the tasting. Luca Roagna makes this choice because the Pajè Vecchie Viti shows the biggest tannic structure. The Vecchie Viti wines will hit the market in January or February 2025.

Verging on racy, offering lively acidity and dense yet refined tannins, this red is still on the reticent side, yet with all its components in the right place and superb potential. The 2019 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is a wild, exotic wine. Ethereal and deceptively medium in body, the dark fruit is perfumed. The weight and gravitas of the old vines are palpable, and yet, somehow, the 2019 remains light on its feet. The aromatics alone are beguiling. The 2019 just needs time to be at its most expressive.

After a break in the tricky 2020 vintage, Escobal is back in 2021 with an impressive release. Hailing from a sand and gravel-based parcel at 547 metres in Samaniego, it's a floral, very lightly wooded Tempranillo with crunchy black cherry and strawberry fruit and sculpted tannins.
