Marquis d'Angerville is not only one of the most talented wine estates in Burgundy, they are also one of the most prestigious in farming practices. The current Marquis, Guillaume, continues the philosophy of his late father, Jacques and grandfather, Sem. In a word, that philosophy is minimalism.
The principal was initiated when Sam D’Angerville took on the negociants and their flawed and corrupt blending practices. Taking offense to how much the negociants messed with the wine, Sem’s response was to do his own estate bottling, a risky move that risked all his local relationships. It was important that the wine be excellent.
Sam’s son, Jacques made sure that excellence stayed the goal and that was achieved by interfering as little as possible in the vineyards. Holding on to four incredible crus made this approach not only possible, but optimal as these terroir are unique and varied in their soil compositions.
The world watched after Jacques passing in 2005. Guillaume would take over the next vintage. He did not disappoint or miss a step. The wines are vibrant as ever and he maintains the top principle at Marquis D’Angerville: let the terroir do the talking.
