The 2021 Cascina delle Rose Rio Sordo is another stunner from this fantastic estate starting with its compelling aromas of forest berry, camphor, wild rose and dark exotic spice. More firmly structured than Tre Stelle and Marcorino, it has tightly wound, fine-grained tannins that support juicy Morello cherry, raspberry, licorice and ground clove while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized. This shows what was possible in the challenging 2024 vintage. Very youthful, energetic and crisp with a healthy core of moderately dry tannins. The pronounced minerality is as striking as the abundant black-cherry and wild-blackberry aromas. The long, slightly sappy finish has excellent intensity. Drink from release.

Medium to full-bodied, it has a pure, layered mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and a gorgeous finish. This incredibly impressive SLH Chardonnay will keep for 10-12 years. Aged 17 months in 40% new French oak, it benefits from air if drinking any time soon.

The 2023 Chardonnay is a powerful, super-phenolic, almost chewy white, but all of that texture is bedded on a base layer of crystal-clear, supple, super-ripe golden orchard fruit. Flint, orange zest, chamomile and yellow apple flesh out magnificently into a long, expansive finish that’s propelled by calibrated acidity. This is an unashamedly large-scaled Chardonnay, but it’s finessed through and through. A 17-month stay in 40% new French oak built loads of creamy texture and spicy complexity into the wine’s frame. The 2023 is a total showstopper.

More savory and creamy than fruity, showing gooseberries, guavas and sliced apples. Fresh and round with medium body and a textured, long finish. Good energy, with a saline twist at the end. Nice phenolics and density at the end. Drink now or hold.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vine is a deep, resonant wine. Black cherry, licorice, chocolate, menthol, spice and new leather are all given an extra kick of intensity in this racy, voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon. Pliant, creamy and expansive with terrific depth, the 2017 is super-expressive and inviting. Hints of rose petal, mint and raspberry fruit add final touches of complexity.

A quality Cream is not an oxymoron, as proven by the NV La Bota de Cream 79 “Bota NO,” a revision of the previous Botas 19 and 38 but bottled eight and five years later, respectively. This has to be around 40 years old and is sourced from Valdespino, where the Oloroso was blended with 25% sweet Pedro Ximénez possibly a century ago, so the wines have had time enough to get integrated and age together. This has 115 grams of residual sugar. It has a nose of old wine and doesn't smell sweet at all, with just a hint of carob beans and notes of concentration (coconut, rusty iron, tree bark). The palate is not that sweet and it's very powerful and concentrated, with the PX completely integrated. 900 half bottles were produced.
