The bouquet impresses for its concentration of a bright zesty fruit, filling the mouth, through to an energetic finish where the fruit swamps the structure but remains well defined. A long finish beyond the norm for this level of appellation. 70% whole bunch vinification. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted Nov 2024.

84-86 Neal Martin - Vinous Media

The 2023 Bourgogne Rouge contains around 50% whole bunch. I prefer this to the Côteaux Bourguignon this year—there's more freshness and delineation. The palate is balanced with supple tannins. It has fleshy ripe red fruit tones and a sweet, pastille-like finish. Fine.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little swirling to unlock notes of blackberry preserves, warm cassis, and black raspberries, leading to suggestions of clove oil, pencil lead, and charcoal. Full-bodied, the palate is coated with muscular black fruit layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and beautifully knit freshness, finishing long and minerally. It's wonderfully classic in the best possible way!

I appear to have underestimated Dalla Valle's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate prior to bottling, as this blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot is now showing more harmony and length. On the nose, intense black cherries join dark, loamy earth scents, while the medium to full-bodied palate is rich and velvety, showing admirable concentration, texture and terrific persistence on the finish.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the wines of this very challenging vintage. Pliant and expressive, this mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon is all class. The softer style of the year is evident, but there are no hard edges, no awkward contours. Floral and spice notes play off a core of dark-toned Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. The 2202 is simply impeccably done in every aspect.

A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is a more restrained, elegant wine in the vintage, yet it still has the supple, approachable style of the vintage as well. Darker currants, cedar pencils, smoked tobacco, and hints of chocolate all define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel, ripe yet building tannins, and a gorgeous finish.

Moderately weighted with a tense, fresh entry, it’s seamless, with a fine-boned texture enhanced by bubbles of striking finesse and delicacy. It will drink at its peak in five to 10 years.

While billed as an entry level/second wine of the estate, the 2021 Asterisk is anything but, and it's a killer wine. Based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot brought up in a mix of new and used oak, it has a deep ruby hue as well as a classic Sloan nose of meaty red and black fruits, iron, roasted herbs, graphite, and licorice. This Pauillac-like full-bodied, concentrated effort has ample mid-palate depth, supple tannins, and a great finish.

A concentrated red made up of a blend of 43% touriga franca, 40% touriga nacional, 7% tinta cao, 5% tinta roriz and 5% sousao. This has ripe aromas of prunes and spices with violets and licorice. Medium- to full-bodied and very intense with plenty of dark-fruit flavors. Aged in 50% new oak. Better in a year or two.

The 2023 Chardonnay Wester Reach is blended from several vineyards including Flax, El Diablo and Heintz. Grapes were harvested September 14 to October 14, and the wine was matured for 11 months in 27% new French oak barrels, followed by four months in tank. It has enveloping aromas of peach, lemon peel, custard, toast and matchstick. The full-bodied palate is satiny and mouth-coating with concentrated flavors. It’s balanced by taut acidity and has a long, luxuriously creamy finish. 4,600 cases were made.
