The NV18 is largely a base blend of the 2018 vintage with additional vintages blended in, typically the previous two. Aged two years in neutral French oak. It's good to know, for those who know, that these wines are often incredibly savoury, yet this is fairly bright and ripe-fruited, with hints of dried straw grass, dried tobacco, loamy earth, tar, and incense. Gentle tannins create a soft palate expression, building with a full-bodied richness of darkberry fruit, and brown baking spices on the mineral-scented finish.

The 2023 Zinfandel Stampede Vineyard is a powerful, deep wine. Varietal notes are dialed up to the maximum in this rich, heady red. Small berries in a late-ripening vintage yielded an unusually dense Zinfandel for this vineyard on the eastern edge of Lodi. The 2023 spent 11 months in neutral 500L puncheons, with no racking until bottling.

This new special cuvée, launched for this biodynamic winery's 20th anniversary, is a finessed and beautiful bottling from vines on the estate's Greywacke river stones. Wild fermented, with time on lees in old Austrian oak and minimal sulfur, it's bright, upright and linear. Aromas of pineapple, peach, lime granita and white florals are underscored with fresh wild herbal tones like fennel and cilantro. The palate is slinky, with more tempered acidity than your typical Marlborough Sauvignon. The focus here is on texture, complexity and food-friendliness. The 2023 Chardonnay Gap’s Crown Vineyard is another impressive wine in this range from Three Sticks. Citrus peel, white flowers, mint, slate and chalk are all beautifully delineated in this brisk, nervy Chardonnay. All the elements are so well balanced. I especially admire the wine’s translucence and mineral-driven purity.

One of the modern classics for d’Arenberg, this is fermented with a high proportion of lightly pressed viognier skins and then has shiraz added late in the elevate to tone the viognier influence into balance. The aromas are fresh, richly spicy and lead by exuberantly ripe blackberries and dark plums with toasted spices and meaty elements. The palate has such richness and exotic, powerful tannins carry ripe dark plums and berries long and deep. Impressive depth and composure. Drink over the next decade.
