The palate is medium-full in feel, with a lovely rose-spiked peach accent that carries across the palate and is then refreshed by ample acidity. The finish ends clean and refreshing, with very good lingering vibrancy.

Notes of dried pear come forth on this rich, full-bodied wine. It's a deeply textural wine, without the same degree of noticeable oak influence as the Clairette, though it still has some oak spice notes on the finish. A firm, powerful, muscular style of Roussanne. Great depth, and a sonorous, echoing finish. Sees 40% new oak.

The 2022 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera pours a uniform ruby color and offers wonderful clarity and refinement, with aromas of black raspberries, anise, cracked pepper, and citrus peel emerging from the glass. Medium-bodied yet beautifully layered, it fills the palate with ripe, refined tannins and refreshing acidity that carries into a long, floating finish. Compared with the Ginestra, this wine shows more tension and citrus-toned lift. Around 16,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2027-2045.

There is a savory, almost salty side of the 2021 Superior Tinto that makes it very tasty and adequate for food. It was produced with 40% each Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz and 5% Sousão from a less warm vintage. The wine is more serious and fresher, with a moderate 14% alcohol and a polished mouthfeel. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.

This fluid red is suave and harmonious, with flavors of pureed boysenberry and black cherry gliding across the palate. Limber, sculpting tannins and balsamico-laced acidity are a supple frame, and accents of stone, wild sage, sassafras root and pepper linger on the fragrant finish. Drink now through 2031. 7,500 cases made, 600 cases imported.

Drunk in Florence with great friends at the end of our inaugural Connoisseur Week Tuscany, this was just utter heaven. Elderflower aromatics, wet stone, quince, green apple, totally moreish. Marchesi Antinori began bottling this Vermentino in 1996, putting the spotlight on a grape variety that does brilliantly in Bolgheri.

The Giovanni Rosso 2022 Etna Rosso Contrade Nuove has a little more textural heft with dark fruit aromas due to the warm summer growing conditions on the volcano. This vintage was hot but cooled down by rain at the right times. Vintner Davide Rosso says that Nerello Mascalese tends to go into reduction and can produce green tannins. His solution is to allow more oxygen in winemaking with the use, for example, of amphorae, which tend to be more porous. Conical oak vats and stainless steel are also used. This pretty wine offers bright fruit, cherry and crushed roses.
