Superb, with loads of character, the 2011 Zinfandel delivers beautiful bramble, potpourri and spice-driven aromatics, medium-bodied richness and real depth and class; the fact that it sells for a song is just icing on the cake. Enjoy it over the coming couple of years. Drink now-2017. These superb values are made by Brothers Jim and Bob Varner, who in addition to these high- quality efforts, release brilliant Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs under their Varner and Neely labels.

"The 2011 Zinfandel is a gorgeous, mouthfilling red from vineyards in Paso Robles. The decision to pick a little early results in a Zinfandel that is lacking a bit of varietal character, but makes up for that with its energy and salinity. Although not especially typical, its hard to argue with the quality of what is in the bottle."

While I thought the 2011 Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles was too herbaceous to be recommended, I would not hesitate to drink the spicy, peppery, cherry and red and blue fruited 2011 Zinfandel Paso Robles. With 14% Petite Sirah included in the blend, it is a tank-fermented, naked, unmanipulated expression of Zinfandel fruit from California’s Central Coast offering plenty of crunchy berry fruit. Enjoy it over the next 12-18 months. From proprietor Bob Varner (also the producer of sensational Chardonnays from Santa Cruz Mountains), Foxglove is Varner’s inexpensive line of wines. Doug Polaner is his name, and high quality wines in all price ranges is his game. I have been tasting with Polaner over a number of years, and these notes represent his very finest value selections.
